Kill myself and sue Apple.
In that order?
Good luck with that.

I keep wondering this: What was the big deal with the 12"? It weighed nearly as much as the Macbook! There is absolutely no point whatsoever in having something smaller when it weighs as much as a regular notebook  As I've also said before, I was pretty glad in the end that a used buy of one I was setting up fell through when I retroactively did my research. Did it have some sort of mythical property I'm not aware of?

The 12 incher was a pro machine with an actual graphics card in it, unlike the MacBook. Integrated graphics are fine with me, but I know that's not the case with everyone else. And besides, the brushed aluminum is sexay. :D :p

So is raven-hued carbon, and I had a 13" notebook with both an integrated and 'actual' graphics card a year + ago that weighed a pound less... I still don't get the constant ballyhoo around a grossly overweight wannabe ultraportable

I will get a Black Macbook if they don't bring out a smaller macbook pro, it is fast enough but my macbook pro is too big to just chuck about. I just want to be able to pick it up and walk around, i dont want to have a big bag for it or need two hands to pick it up!

I do want smaller than 13.3" too!

Laugh at all the people comlaining here.

Without seriously limiting it's functions and capabilities you aren't going to get much better than the McBook when it comes to form factor. Because of the heat it'lll have to have a slower chip than the MacBook. One Ram slot. To get it as thin as you lot want it, they'll have to drop the ethernet port.

There are so many changes they'll need to do and lose so many things, you'll all still moan like a bunch of old woman.

Just going to stick to the macbook then. The gpu is **** but I value the small size.

I'll get that MacBook I was going to get before I decided that I might as well wait and see what new things MW08 would bring.

Nothing Apple took to long, I already bought the macbook.

Ditto, and very happy too.

An ultraportable would still be great for any possible weight saving though. A Macbook and camera gear in one rucksac does still weigh quite a bit!

I'll do the same thing as if they do announce an "ultra portable" - not buy one.

My 12" powerbook is still working for me. I'll eventually upgrade to a 15" MPB since I don't lug my laptop around like I did in grad school. To those who have had to carry around a laptop with other books/equipment, a pound or two really does make a difference.

Plus if they really go without an optical drive, I don't think I could give up that flexibility

I'll be disappointed in Apple for letting yet another product line remain unfilled, one that could bring them potential sales (yes, I've read all the arguments about how a headless iMac would cut into sales of the Mac Pro). I think as Apple expands, they need to loosen up a bit and match the product line of their competitors now that they are embracing the direct competition with them (the fastest Vista notebook ad comes to mind here)

for how big of a niche? Apple's computers are already a pretty niche product, so I don't understand why they'd narrow it down even further to a group of people who say they want it, but might not even buy it. Obviously Apple is about potential sales, but it sounds like the ultraportable idea is limited to a select few who couldn't fulfill their needs with a macbook or a macbook pro.

Look at Dell taking on the iMac with XPS. Why shouldn't Apple do the same? It might hurt sales of their existing products, but gain them sales they never would have gotten otherwise. Why not a subnotebook, a headless iMac, and a gaming machine (high-end graphics).

well, for one thing, Dell has a much greater level of market share than Apple does. Dell buyers aren't very brand loyal, and Apple buyers generally are VERY brand loyal. So what incentive do Dell buyers have to come to Apple? Very little, especially if they're going to compete on price.

Yes, I know, Apple's pricing is much more competitive now. But ask a current Dell owner if that's the case and they'll tell you that their preconceived notion about Apple being the higher-priced alternative is still true. It's not easy to change public opinion.

I don't follow the logic here. If Dell buyers aren't loyal, then why wouldn't they want to try an Apple machine, especially since, as you admit, Apple is now more competitive in pricing (yes, it is difficult to get past previous associations). I come back to the latest web ad, the one that hawks the MBP as the fastest Vista notebook. I'd like to see Apple back up their advertisement with something new to broaden their appeal, something that's a computer rather than a computer accessory or cell phone.
