Its not always the best, but in NYC, t-mobile isn't that bad an option. Its also VERY cheap, even when compared to france. If you have your iPhone unlocked, it should work on tmobile

My choices by carrier
Verizon: HTC Touch Pro2 / BB Storm 2
T-Mobile: myTouch 3G / HTC Touch Pro2
Sprint: Palm Pre / HTC Hero
AT$T: iPhone / BB Bold

If you wanna go unlocked and use the phone on either AT$T or T-Mobile:
Unlocked iPhone
Nokia E71/E72
HTC Touch Diamond2

Thanks for all the info everyone! Very helpful thread...

I think I have boiled it down after some research to either the motorola shole, htc pro 2 and some blackberry model though frankly I think I'm really going to miss the iphone touch screen after i start using a qwerty keyboard.

I am currently in a plan that costs me €42 a month, which includes about 300 minutes, unlimited texting, and of course the unlimited data. Oh and the phone itself (an 8GB 3G) cost me at the time €99, I know the phone was selling for $199 in the US. So....going from this very affordable plan to my cheapest option being $70 a month (minus any texting plan!!!) is simply too much, especially considering right now under Verizon it's costing me nothing.

dont forget those conversion rates (an euro was at one time worth $1.50, though its lower now). Currently, that 42 euro plan your on is around $62. So its a tad more expensive here, but not by as much as you think. Doesn't help with the family plan situation obviously

now, instead of being nitpickety and critical, Ill try and help...blackberry tour. Hands down the best phone verizon offers at the moment

Well true but you can't go by exchange rates alone. My source of income here is in euros not dollars then converted to euros, and when I return home I'll make money in dollars so the exchange rate is only relevant insofar as it would be affecting me directly which it is not. If the iphone plan was costing me between €60 and €70 it would be as unaffordable to me as a $70 plan in the US. To me the $70 is not gonna be just €48 or whatever the rate makes it, it's gonna be 70 bucks I couldn't afford paying for in the US.

I just ordered an HTC Hero. I was planning to buy an iPhone 3Gs but only interested in getting it without a contract & didn't want to go the jail breaking & unlocking route. I went as far as driving to Belgium to pick up an unlocked iPhone (all mobiles unlocked in Belgium, which is cool!) but the entire country is out of 3Gs', which could last another 8 weeks...

This was unacceptable to me. I did a lot of research and testing with a friend's HTC. While comparing online I came across many reviews done before HTC updated their software. Before the latest update, the HTC was laggy but now it's smooth.

Ironically, Apple's advertising the 3Gs in the end made me buy an HTC

I guess Blackberry is the best smart phone for Verizon. Just stay away from the Storm, two of my buddies have it and can't stand it. GL!

Yep, every other keyboard sucks.

Careful with the touch pro 2, it has the exact same internals as the touch pro 1 which I had. Once you start filling it up with apps and custom UI's and themes it will bog down. Plus the touch pro 2 has a bigger screen and bigger resolution then the first one so the processor and graphics chips will have to work A LOT harder. If you wanna go with winmo then wait another month or so for the upgrade to 6.5 and some of the new capacitive screens.

That's another thing, resistive touch screens suck really bad. Especially when your use to the iphone's capacitive, waiting for the sholes is really your best bet, or a blackberry I guess just not the storm. I have never used a bb besides the storm and some old bb so I can't say much about them.

I'd love a Touch Diamond 2 with a slide out numeric keypad. There's far too much "me too" and iPhone clones.
