Why don't you just put a silent toggle switch on one of your homescreens.

Some of you are making too big a deal of this. :)

What exactly are we talking about here? Are people complaining about turning off the ringer? If so, there is already a row of toggles in the notification bar. Or holding the power button down. Or if the ringer goes off, and you want to mute it, just turn the phone over. So many options and all easy. Don't understand how anyone can complain about this.

Waiting for a dev team to release something doesn't make it difficult.

Look here for the process of rooting

For first time rooters this is a mine field compared to jailbreaking which only requires the latest jailbreak program.

That is because the carriers here wanted different versions of the GS2 so there are apparently 4 model numbers and that guide is telling you to find your model so you can get the right files. In anycase, that requires some reading is all. Im sure at XDA it is probably easier.

There is a superoneclick rooting file that is easier than that. Still shouldnt take long and jailbreaking still isnt as good as rooting because when you jailbreak, it just allows you to get some things that Android has had for years and many cost money. Rooting an Android opens up a whole new world for what you can do to your device.

----------

Honestly, the silent button implementation is better. You might want to think that people are lazy to prefer it but i now own a GS3, and have owned many symbian phones in the past, and the one thing i hate is having to mute by mashing on the volume controls. Flicking a switch is simple, to the point, and you get used to it fast.

Yeah it is easier but that button also breaks. Mine broke and i had to get a whole new back cover just to fix it. Im just saying how hard it is to look at your screen for 5 seconds while putting it in silient mode? If you are a office worker who needs to do it often, get NFC tags. That is even easier.

Because it is unnecessary clutter on my home screen?

You simply don't get it. Why not leave our aesthetic choices to us then if it doesn't agree with you?

Been using iPhones for three years alongside androids and none of the mute buttons ever broke on me. The ones i see broken are from people who are very careless with their devices anyway.

Just like the person above, it is hard for you to understand why i prefer a silent button. So I'll give you this: why is it so hard to open an app for 5 seconds instead of putting a widget on screen? Or why is it so hard to go into settings and flicking an on/off switch than using an onscreen/notification area toggle?

Well you said you didn't want to mash the volume button. That flicking a switch is much simpler (your words). So why not access silence mode through a toggle switch or the pull down notification bar?

So if you miss the mute switch feature of iOS, granted it's actually a physical switch instead of an onscreen switch. Wouldn't this solution be an acceptable compromise? It's still the same concept, silencing your ringer with one action.

Here's my number one reason. I walk into a room for an interview, meeting, presentation, or any number of other situations that etiquette dictates phones are inappropriate for, at least twice a week. I suddenly realize that I haven't muted my phone. I reach down while I'm talking, slip my hand in my pocket, and flip a switch. It's off. There is no way it's going to ring on me.

Compare that to having to take a phone out of your pocket turn it on, unlock it, toggle your software switch, and toss it back in your pocket. One is distracting; maybe even rude. The other is inconspicuous and likely not noticed by the rest of the folks in the room.

Yea I can see that but that's just one special circumstance.

It is just like people wanting on screen or notification toggles and widgets. Why can't they just open the apps or go into settings?

I hate unnecessary stuff on screen. Hard concept for some people but that is just me. Flicking a button is 100000x times easier for me. You may agree to disagree but that is how i see it.

I understand why you like it better. I just dont understand why it is a big deal. There are a few ways to put it in silent mode that takes a few seconds.

I liked the silent button on the iPhone too but mine broke and ive seen others break. I dont abuse my phones at all. My 2G is in emaculate shape and looks nearly brand new and i save the boxes and everything else that come with all my phones.

It's one special circumstance that reoccurs for me on a frequent basis, and I'd imagine for students who are supposed to have their phones on silent (or not on them at all), or any numbe of people working in the professional world. It's no really much of a "special circumstance" as it is a "lots of people find themselves in a situation just like this all the time circumstance".

Even still it's a trivial feature that shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Of all the features I value on my smartphone," icgonito silence " is not one of them.

If widgets and toggles can be a deal breaker for many, in fact things like notification LEDs, why can't a mute button? Because some people don't care about it?

Who has said widgets or toggles are a deal breaker? Those are usually mentioned as perks but nobody has ever said, ...."wow if i cant have widgets or toggles, im out"!
As for ROMs, ...that is just another element way beyond what we are discussing here.

Its a silence button. Either you can adapt to some small things or you cant. I prefer a capacitive home button but it doesnt have it. Im living with it,....as hard as that may be....lol <that was sarcasm>

Those bolder words are kind of a dangerous statement. I know plenty of people who have said that they would never own a phone that didn't allow a weather widget. I point out that I can get weather in any app from any screen just by pulling down from the top edge, but that functionality isn't what they want, and some insist that it isn't what they need.

We all have itches that we like having scratched. For me, I have grown accustomed to having a hardware switch for silencing.

It's funny when I read comments like this because if you have been using iOS all this time, simple concepts to Android users, are simply not thought of by Apple users.

You ask above, why can't they just open an app or go into settings, instead of wanting widgets to display information. Well, because it doesn't require any effort to glance at a screen and see your info or mute the phone by tapping a button. But even better than that, and this is something an iPhone and ipad user can't comprehend, because it has always been denied to you, is the notification LED. We know if we have an email, text, mms, if an app updates, if a weather alert comes in, if there is traffic on the way he me, if a meeting time has changed, etc... Just by a blinking light. Phone can be muted and in standby and you know what is up and without disturbing anyone else, like if you are in a meeting.

Automator is your friend. Enable auto addition to dropbox photos folder from android phone, have Automator on your mac automatically add photos to iPhoto. Works in less than a minute.

Explain this sorcery to me!!!

Camera is great on most of the Android phones, even bether then Iphone ! :p

The one series HTC phones, the s3, and the xperia ion all have better cameras that the 4s.

So far in many lighting conditions and distances I have not been able to match the picture quality of my iP4 with the GS3..... It's p####g me off too.

Make sure your lensr isn't dirty. My nexus had something on the lenses and once I wiped it off it made a huge difference.

Ditto. Was getting white streaks on all my photos. Cleaned the lens cover and hey presto - getting great quality photos now. I think the lens cover is very sensitive to smudging so it pays to keep it clear.

Yet the convenience of a mute button is regarded as something that is not relevant at all....

Exactly. But if you cannot adapt to a huge screen or some other element of a competitor all of a sudden you get labelled as a "fanboy".

But it's OK for you to label people as fanboys, right?
The amount of samsung fanboys i see berating other android competitors nowadays shows that "sheep" usually just needs a new hyped up toy. If it is not an iPhone, it is a galaxy. iFans, meet the sFans!

Goes both ways. Like it or not.

If anything, most people here are quick to jump to label anyone not using a samsung as an "iFan", "isheep", or plain stupid than the other way around. They have hard time believing their new mobile lord which liberated them from the old one can do no wrong. They have fallen into the same state they accused others of.

You accused others of using the label fanboys, within thirteen minutes you used that label. It does go both ways, but you cannot be taken seriously when you use double standards within a quarter of an hour. I have got to ask. did you not even think? Or did you just forget what you typed 13 minutes previously? I find that incredible.

Im done with you, your discussions are worthless, you contradict your so called values within 15 minutes.Period.

I don't see how my one post can mess up your zen but whatever floats your boat.

As for labelling, i labelled the mindless fanboys around i see in many place. I did not label any specific person here. In fact the people i have been replying too are hardly fanboys. I respect their choice on what they use especially the way they explain it. I also call people ifans on many occasions if that makes you feel better lol. There are people on both camps which are simply too attached to their stuff and i don't see why you are so worked up over it.

I myself use a GS3. How is that for irony?
