It's interesting to see people wanting the home button to go away, let alone due to it breaking. I've owned more iOS devices than anyone reasonably should have over the years. iPhones, iPads, iPod touches, and have never had a home button flake out on me. Where I feel this is also interesting is that, pretty much since iOS 5, every iPad (even the first generation if you enabled it in Settings) has had gestures that replace everything you do with the home button (save for logging in post-iOS-9). So, now, aside from getting out of the lock screen, you don't need the home button for much of anything. I can't imagine Apple won't revert to making that element optional again in a future iOS release, especially if more FaceID enabled iOS devices start hitting the market.

I’m also surprised people have had malfunctions with the home button, especially on multiple devices. I’ve owned 5 iOS devices long term, each used on average for about 3 years, and have never had an issue. Either I’m lucky, or they’re unlucky, or we’re using our devices differently.

Build Quality improvement and lower price. Like almost every other iDevice I have had since 2015, my 12.9 2nd gen went bust 12 months in (had the unresponsive touch screen issues). Apple said nothing was wrong, so I sold it. I bought a 2018 iPad that does almost all I need.

No desire to replace with another iPP - except if there was a Mini Pro with pencil support. The Mini is is the sweet spot in size etc. for me. Should Apple upgrade that, my mom will get this 2018. Otherwise, I am pretty much done with iPads for the time being.

iOS 12 has demotivated me regarding a potential upgrade to a possible face ID/iPX ui iPad 12.9.
No more home button failure anxiety.
iOS 12 working nicely so far...

I had the original iPad (2010)..... then upgraded to the 2nd or 3rd one? (can't remember).... then a 3rd time to the first iPad Air (2013).

Haven't bought anything since then because...... why? I use it for web browsing, Facebook, YouTube, and watching movies on airplanes..... nothing else.

I've bought the new model iPhone almost every single year since the original.... if anything just to have the latest/greatest tech on the street..... but I've never felt that way about the iPad.

Honestly, when the iPhone X comes out with the "Plus" screen..... I don't have any desire for an iPad at all anymore..... anything I can't do on my phone I'd rather just open up my laptop.
I was going to write something similar. I enjoy my first generation 12-inch iPad, but a bigger iPhone would be much more useful to me than any new features on an iPad.

I have a 10.5" iPad Pro 2, however, I wanted to chime in and say that I would easily upgrade to a new iPad if they simply add USB-C and keep the Lightning port. I think having a second port makes the iPad far more functional, and eliminates the dongle nightmare we face.

I guess it'd be mouse support. :/ Though I know some might reject it, it is a more precise input method for editing texts.

Knowing keyboard shortcuts helps immensely. Shift + arrow selects text, no need to find an insertion point, and force the select menu to appear. Option+arrow moves word by word, command+arrow moves to the top or bottom of the text, etc. If you hold the command button, keyboard shortcuts are displayed on the screen.

Better quality control - no bending issues, no USB-C headphones issues, no touchscreen problems. At least I want to hear from Apple that it addresses those problems. I’m highly disappointed with quality/price ratio of modern Apple and the fact that they just hide the problems instead of fixing.

It can be thicker, but it should be more reliable.

Learn something every day. Thank you very much.:)

^ THIS. I will skip iPad Pros until Apple actually does something about making these too thin. Just bought a second 2018 iPad for myself.

If the 2019 keeps this chassis and adds more RAM, that’ll be a purchase for sure. Or if iPad Mini 5 keeps the 4 chassis, gains more RAM and pencil support, I’d buy that too.

This is the correct answer. It's going to take a lot more than a unitasking smart connector and gimmicks like ProMotion for me to buy another iPad Pro... specifically, a keyboard cover that includes a trackpad and dongle to allow full access to USB peripherals.

Good answer although ProMotion is a really nice feature....
