Hand it back to the police. Tell them it just ended up in my hands...
Face it you would never guess the password.
I'd doubt there would be any designs on there, I might have a quick look though the contacts but I doubt it.

So you wouldn't mind some random person rooting through your personal computer if they had it?
The question never stated anywhere that the computer was stolen merchandise. Of course the recent break in did prompt me to pose this question sheerly to generate discussion.
Perhaps, one of his family members knew you were an devoted Apple user and gave you the device. Would you still humbly respect the privacy, or would take a peek into the digital life of one of the greatest minds of our time.
There's P.C., and then there's stupid. I'm P.C. - and proud of it. So I'm in the "hand it back to the police/family" camp.
But... even if a person's ethics were a little less than honourable.... if it is in your hands, then it's gotta be stolen. If it's stolen the cops are looking for it, and in this case they aren't just going to file the paperwork - they're going to be really looking for it. You can't turn the stuff on 'cause you know Apple may flagged any internet activity. You can't show it to anyone 'cause they may be P.C.
You have to worry that the person who gave it/sold it to you may get caught by the police. They'll give you up in a second flat to the authorities to get their charges plead down.
At this point you are in possession of stolen goods, which is a crime and can be prosecuted. If you haven't made any effort to return the stolen goods, you can be sure that the authorities are going to make an example of you.
In this case..... It is smart to turn these things over the family/authorities as fast as you can "hot potato". Though that still leaves the awkward question of how you got them in the first place....
How bout this, just to further discussion.
Mr. Jobs has left you the device (Mac or iPad) in his will. You have no obligation to turn it in to anyone, it is legally yours, and still has his data on it.

If Mr. Jobs gave me his Mac I would go to Finder and see how he had his folders setup. I'd look for designs to see what they had been working on. He said he was as proud of the designs that never came to market as the ones that did, so it would be fun to see what they were thinking could be done. TV related and car related products might be something i tried to find further info on.
So do you think he gave Tim Cook all of his passwords/work computers? I guess all the main corporate stuff would be on the network drives like any corporate, but i bet he kept some things to himself.
The odds of this scenario rule out any chance I'd end up with it.

I can honestly say that I would probably look at his contacts and then send it back to his family.
