Failed as in the 14" MBP thinks that the 'Function' key and 'Option' key are pressed (engaged). Bassicly the key board is useless under these conditions. Apple repair removed the key and confirmed there was not liquid damage. Just a faulty key board.

I went through this with a 2017 butterfly key board on an 13 Mac Pro. Shocked that I am back in this position again.
I must be aware of it.
How long did it take to behave like that ?

Also I must ask you ,even tho u may not have the answer...

I noticed there are two kind of kb,which is because there are two keyboard manufacturers ( i trust) .

1) shorter key travel, not as smooth, slightly more reactive ofc

2)longer key travel, smoother, feels like chewing gum ,more mushy IG

Do u happen to know which of the two you have got ? And if u received your new mbp,how is the kb on that one ?

I somehow feel that the tactile feedback was more solid when typing on the M1 MacBook Pro compared to the present 2021 MacBook Pro 16".

I was kind of worried about the keyboard since I'm coming from a Lenovo who does do great laptop keyboards. But I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. Travel isn't nearly as much, but there is a good actuation that makes it feel like there is more travel than there is.

I also wonder if there is more variation in Apple keyboards. I've heard some Apple people complain about them while others say it's the best keyboard Apple has ever produced.

I would say a slight meh but its growing on me after a few days. I'd prefer a little more key travel and it feels slightly hollow, but it's not a deal breaker. I prefer the keyboard on my old 2013 MBP and even my mom's M1 MBA feels a little better. I'll probably add an external mechanical type keyboard sometime soon for desk use.

Coming from Thinkpads, I like the Macbook keyboard, but I still think the Thinkpad keyboards are better.

I agree. I think they took two steps forward with the 2019-2020 MacBook Air/Pro keyboards and a half-step back with the 2021 M1 Pro/Max. It's still better than the butterfly keyboard.

Yes there is this is slightly hollow feel in the new MacBook Pro 16 keys, that is the exact feeling I have when typing on its keys.

I agree there's a feel to the 2021 MBP that is so good. I was wondering if any one has been able to compare it to the new color iMacs. Like the keyboard on my MacBook Pro so much its hard to want to use it in clamshell with my older apple keyboard.

I really like the keyboard; no complaints. I still prefer mechanical keyboards overall, but for a laptop, I am more than satisfied. Way better than those damn butterfly keys...

I got a m1 16 inch recently and not a fan of keyboard. Compared to two m1 airs that I've had which feel exactly the same, the 16 inch has lower key travel. Which is weird because I would have thought that they'd put the exact same keyboard in all their M1 and later models. The 16 is also clickier while the M1 airs are a bit spongier, but the key travel distance is much more comfortable on them. The 16's keyboard almost feels like the external "magic keyboard" Apple sells which is ridiculously flat and low travel

I have gotten used to keys on the MacBook Pro. Yes it feels softer compared to previous keyboards but I have grown to love typing on it.

In your opinion. In mine, it is NOT the best keyboard Apple has ever made. That award goes all the way back to the PowerBook Wallstreet
Whoof. I had that Mac and I remember the keyboard never feeling solid at all. The switches were ok, but they were mounted on a really flimsy little panel (bad) that you could flip up quickly to get at the internals (good). Mine never failed or anything, but I don't remember it being great to type on from a solidity standpoint.
