So if I were a gamer I should wait, but as a video editor/encoder Im probably not risking much by buying now. Am I getting this right?

well its all up to patience money and timing obviously but my opinion...

i have the 3.06 and do a lot of video and basically this hardware is enough to do everything you need at a sane workspeed....ie fcp and motion etc etc all work with renders and stuff either instant or fast enough to not slow down my work at all

of course the software will get more complex but right now and until the whole core thing goes crazy (ie. a good time after the first snow leopard i think) the 3.06 is basically a great video machine

(of course encoding/transcoding could be faster but im used to living with that :) )

i think if u need it now buy it now it really is an excellent imac and my personal thinking is even new quad hardware etc wont really be used to do magic by fcp and osx for a good 1+ years yet

to be honest even for gaming i think its a good buy.....

It seems like the consensus is that the new iMacs will probably just be a "speedbump." If that's true I think I might just get the 3.06Ghz without regret. I just wish I could get it with a 1.5TB HD.

The Mobility Radeon HD2400/2600XT in the iMac is heading toward two years old already. These are rather expensive computers as well.

....? the 3.06 iMac is nvidia?

you dont want too big internal hd

its better at least for video to have mediumsize internal and then use fw800 external hds for your footage

Why? If it fits in an iMac, why not? I'm a storage hog and I'd rather it be inside my computer than having multiple drives connected to computer.

good question

for editing video your system works best when u run the app from internal hd and footage and render files from externals (or second internal if u are macpro owner)

(im really thinking fce/p here....imovie no idea i imagine same rules apply but imovie has less heavy stuff going on so maybe its not so much of an issue)

basically the reason is your machine is reading and writing lots of small data to the internal just running your editor app plus all the regular os activity (even with 4GB ram u still get a lot of disk activity when running a proapp)....u want your footage in big files on a "clean" disk and not fragmented up on a drive where the head is skipping around doing ten things at once......

so best practice is run app from internal....and footage and render files on external fw800 (or maaaaybe usb2 if u have the bandwidth and depending on your filetypes (something like prores u need fw))

if u have to run it all from an internal hd u run risk of choppy performance especially with large HD video files

also...this is more minor but usually access times on very large drives are slower (read head has to travel further) and they used to be less reliable tho maybe thats not true anymore....so a 1+TB isnt aaaaaalways the best choice for an internal (i ended up with 750GB)

re video cards the 8800GS isnt the newest but its easily enough for video editing and effects....apple is very good at making software to use their hardware eg coreanimation etc......if u want the best video cards for crysis or whatever then u need a peecee game machine :)

EDIT: seems like "large drives = slower" is not true any more... depends on hardware but sometimes large drive with 5400 rpm can be faster than 320gb drive with 7200 rpm (from tekzilla so i guess its true)

Really, When is it?

Hello

After all what's been speculated on when the new iMac might come out, til now frankly speaking, my desperation has mounted to its almost unbearable level, as the PC I'm working on right now could as well be put in the museum. Do you have clearer sights on what may be going on and the closest possible machine powering it?

Thank you guys!

We don't know, but it's possible to see quad-core in high end iMac. If quad-core comes then maybe 2.66/2.8/2.93,3.06 so that 2.66 is the entry level and so on.

Quad core running 2.66ghz+ and better GPU is really all I want.

DDR3 isn't much better than DDR2. Performance is nearly the same and DDR2 ram is dirt cheap.
