Relief... federal tax refund is finally here. Those letters were crazy making.

I was able to help mom with some bills and will buy her a nice lunch on Mother’s Day too. Now how will I not say anything about this until Sunday, IDK.

Currently on my mind: which iMac to get. I know it’ll be a 2019, but top tier stock model 27” (or do a custom order for a 512 ssd) and furnish the RAM, or top tier 21.5” custom with Apple RAM and 512 ssd. I’ll have to get a new router and pay for installation of that. Plus, checking our electricity throughout the house.

I’d rather be downstairs than upstairs now (mom)...shame Apple’s laptop keyboards stink.

Anyway, grateful the refund came through.

You’ll just blow it all on old movie posters and DVD’s!
Enjoy your windfall!

I always forget something even if I do write it down.
It's what happened to me. Imagine wasting half an hour looking for something you think you bought because you remembered after the fact. Chances are it was sold out anyway. That's what I tell myself to avoid another trip to the store in one day and look a fool.

I could Instacart it...

Kazmac: Whichever iMac you decide to get, be sure to go with an SSD rather than fusion drive!

A suggestion for you: as for Apple laptops, one thing you could do is to get a MacBook Pro and set it up like a desktop, using peripherals including Apple's BT Magic keyboard and Magic Mouse 2, and put the thing on a stand and/or get an external monitor if you need the larger screen, and this offers more portability and flexibility than an iMac. I have been doing this for several years now (first with a 2015 15" MBP and now with a 2018 MBP), and I know that for me this is a much more feasible situation than having a desktop machine. If I need to use the machine somewhere else, simply a matter of unplugging it from the wall if it's plugged in, and toting it off with me to the next location, whether that be another room in the house, my deck or somewhere else away from home altogether. For travel I have the smaller 2017 12" MacBook, but if need be, I could certainly use the 15" for that purpose as well.

One reason I started doing this back in 2015 was that after waiting for the announcement of the 21.5" iMac with retina and being disappointed by the specs when it finally was available, I started looking at options and realized that I could walk into the Apple store and pick up an MBP right off the shelf that had exactly the specs I wanted: the 512 GB SSD, the amount of RAM (16 GB).....no need to do a CTO from Apple for an iMac similarly outfitted, and the cost turned out to be pretty much the same. I liked this solution so well that in December of 2018 I bought a new 15" MBP, again being able to get just what I wanted in terms of specs (1 TB SSD, 32 GB RAM) right at the store, no waiting, no need to customize anything. Of course everyone has their own priorities and preferences, so I'm just tossing this idea out as something to think about, if it might work for you.....

Thank you very much.

My situation changed with my mom’s health so I would prefer to be downstairs where she is rather than up. I cannot use track pads, but can use a mouse.

I am skittish about the MBPs keyboards though and have thought about the set up you mentioned. I am leaning toward the iMacs.

Glad your MBP set up works for you. And thanks for posting.:)

Very glad the tax refund came thorough for you, and that you can give your mom much needed support.

The very best of luck, as I know it is not an easy situation.

@Scepticalscribe thank you. I hope you are well, it’s been intense. I hope I helped discover mom’s non-skeletal issues. We’re trying to take things as best we can.

Like you, I am not good with trackpads; I MUCH prefer a mouse and even when I use my 12" MB on a trip, where I do use that machine's keyboard, I still have the mouse at hand, too. I just cannot seem to get the same level of precision and control with a trackpad that I do with a mouse...... Both at home and in hotel rooms I've at times used the 12" MB on my lap, my feet propped up on the bed, and my mouse within reach on a table or nightstand. The keyboard on the MB doesn't bother me all that much, but then again I don't use that machine nearly as much as I do the MBP. The 2018 15" MBP is my "main" machine, used for hours daily, and I have been very happy using an external keyboard (the one with the additional numbers pad) with it. I think I've only typed on that machine's actual built-in keyboard two or three times since I bought it!

Definitely wherever your mother is you should be, too, within easy sight and hearing, as things can happen so quickly! With a laptop as opposed to an iMac, you and your machine could be wherever you need to be at any time -- upstairs, downstairs, whatever -- and it does sound as though in your situation this will be important. On the other hand, yes, if she is and will continue to be downstairs most of the time and you can be, too (I'm not familiar with your actual living situation and layout of your [shared?] home), it makes sense to consider an iMac -- just get it set up in a convenient location near wherever your mother spends most of her time and you're good to go.

It's particularly important right now that you're giving everything careful consideration and not just rushing out to buy the first thing you see.....whatever machine you decide to purchase and use in the end is something that will be an important part of your life for a while, several years at least, so making a good decision and purchase now will pay off in so many ways as time goes on. Good luck and keep strategizing as to what will work out best for you!

I've been extremely anxious over the thought of death lately. I felt like before I could accept it for what it was, now I'm just terrified of the unkown.

Not a massive fan of trackpads, either, although I have learned how to use them.

I really dislike all of the finger gestures that we are meant to have mastered, and I loathe having to use or tap on tech screens - I like the more tactile experience of a proper keyboard.

Ugh. Finger gestures. Not a fan (except of the peace sign and it's cousin the one fingered salute.) :p

Actually my arthritic wrists prevent me from using trackpads. I've tried Macs and PCs. That's partially why I've been unable to move to Windows (The main point, I am Windows challenged, I screw up their computers right out of the gate).

I put up tapping the screen with the iPad because of digital art, but I much prefer mechanical, tactile keyboards too.

I'll probably have to keep my set up upstairs because it's easier for the both of us, and just use the machine around mom's schedule and work with the iPad downstairs. Of course, I cannot make up my mind about what iMac I want. Leaning toward the 27" again.

Speaking of mom, I couldn't wait until Sunday to tell her about the bills and helping her with extra money. :) She was so delighted. There's still another Mom's Day card with her favorite Lotto scratch off inside and lunch coming from our favorite Asian place. So, yay! :p

Wonderful for you that you can still treat her on Mother's Day, and wonderful for her that she is still able to appreciate it.

"Favourite Asian place" sounds cool - I just love Asian food.

Do enjoy.

It’s weird that we have two different dates for mother’s day.

Two different societies.

In a way, I was almost glad that I was away - observing elections - when our Mother's Day celebration came up; experiencing the absence of my mother the first year after she passed was challenging, according to my brother.

I found Father's Day difficult, too, the first few years after my dad passed, whereas now, I smile at some memories.

I find them all difficult. Try my best to just forget about them like any other significant day in the diary.

Having lost both parents and both parents-in-law, yes, Mother's Day and Father's Day are just not the same for me any more. I do have an elderly friend -- a friend's mother -- who is now 92 and I do keep in touch with her, especially around Mother's Day since one of her daughters, a close friend, is now deceased. That's still not the same as being able to connect with my own mother but it makes me feel better anyway. Since I don't watch much television I am spared all the adverts, which I'm sure rub salt into the wounds of those who for whatever reason don't have a parent...
