A member who seems to have cancelled his account. BigMcGuire always made interesting and useful comments. Earlier this summer he took a couple of very short breaks but kept his account. Now it says cancelled. Too bad.

I hadn’t noticed this but what a shame, a nice guy and a great contributor, especially to the EV thread. Does ‘cancelled’ mean the account can’t be reactivated?

A car is so far down on my list of priorities, because I would only be able to use it like 3 months out of the year unless I wanted to drive 1500 miles to and from college several times a year (which I don't want to do). Plus, on-campus vehicle registration is basically a lottery since the campus is so small, so who knows if I'd even get a spot...

I already got a new stage keyboard over the summer, so now I'm planning to upgrade everything else now that I've saved up some money—computer, phone, studio monitors, PA, keyboard case, etc.
Ah. That makes sense.

Going to Anchorage from where I live, the only alternative way to get there is to bike 15+ miles, and if I go to college here from where I live, that’s going to be a doozy biking that much everyday. Plus I’m limited to where I can go. I won’t be able to go to Palmer/Wasilla, unless you’re a crazy person, as the only place to bike would on the shoulder of the road, or on the railroad. The rest is swamp. Also, there’s a bunch of homeless in Anchorage. So I pretty much need a car and I don’t want to keep driving my parents car, simply because I don’t want to get into an accident with their car, so I need to find a way to buy my own.

You can practice in advance - just get into a cold shower fully clothed and just keep tearing up £20* notes while you’re in there.

* Or any other currency of your choice
This one has it right.

Although I had a driver's license at age sixteen and while at home during high school and returning there on breaks from college could use one of my parents' cars, I didn't have my own, really didn't need it. Actually from I recall, freshmen, or at least those of us who were living in dormitories, were not allowed to have cars on campus at all. Anyway, towards the end of our senior year, my roommate received a brand-new car as her big combination Christmas/Birthday/Graduation gift, which she drove back to campus after Spring break.

She was so delighted to have wheels so all of us could explore the scenic area around and beyond our school further than we already had, and her friends were thrilled for and with her. It was so exciting to just get in the car and go somewhere, see something new, on a day when we didn't have a lot to do on campus. OK, so I'm lucky to be alive to tell this story: One beautiful spring afternoon we were going out somewhere for an excursion and we stopped to get ice cream cones..... While getting back into the car, I stumbled and spilled the contents of my cone on the floor of the front passenger side.....

I was lucky I didn't have to walk or hitch a ride back to campus! Whew! My roommate was understandably angry and upset at first, as naturally all of us were, but in the end we got most of the mess cleaned up and we actually eventually went on with our excursion. When we got back to campus, the next day or so once we had found a place, I also paid to have the car professionally cleaned, especially the interior. Of course my roommate realized that it was an accident, and those do happen, and she was more than gracious about everything as time went on. Our friendship and roommate relationship stayed intact. Funny thing, though: after that we never again stopped for ice cream or any other food or beverage treats to take in the car with us when out on excursions.....

Right, I gotcha. That seems like reason enough for you to need a car in that case, since you'd presumably be driving it year-round.

If the iPhone SE 2020 works well enough, you can probably keep using it and save up!

I have often heard that referred to as ”A hole in the water you throw money into.”

Agreed. When I was working for Fisheries Dept in PNG, we hired a specialist boat builder from Sweden.
He used to say that a boat was "A hole in the water, lined with wood, into which you throw £20 notes".
Also seen on the back of a horse float "Poverty is owning a horse".

Yes. There is a reason why they say: if you want to bankrupt a country "gift" them a navy ship.

"Cancelled" generally means that you - the member - has chosen to terminate the account, and asked that it be "cancelled" (rather than the forum 'suspending' you).

I would imagine that it could be re-activated, should your circumstances - personal and/or professional, change - and that then, you could request that your account be reactivated.

@Expos of 1969 also says (from experience) that this is possible.

In any case, I am sorry to see that @BigMaGuire has decided to leave the forum.

Thanks, yes it is sad, seems a thoroughly decent chap.

People who are on their phones or talking (or doing both) during presentations, it's just unbelievable.

I read on my phone during some Zoom meetings. Disable my camera so they don't know. Only way to keep my sanity when some people keep going over and over and over the same already resolved issue.

I was mildly successful at staying engaged during Zoom calls. I always kept my camera on though, out of respect for the other meeting participants. Personally, I got really annoyed when people turned their cameras off...
