It has been confirmed my good friend lost his home in the Palisades Fire.

So thoughts and prayers for him and everyone else who has lost their homes.

It will take a long time for recovery.
It's about two years in on recovery from the Gray Fire in Medical Lake, WA and most of the houses have been rebuilt in town. Around Silver Lake nearby, they are about two-thirds done, from the look of it. I'd say it will be longer to get the insides of the homes re-stocked with new belongings.

The Babb fire in Malden, WA happened in 2020, and Malden just got its community building (post office, fire station, city hall) rebuilt in 2024. A much poorer community. Some background from 2023: https://www.kxly.com/news/nearly-th...cle_31c871dc-30bf-11ee-af56-63698f9780b2.html

with calmer winds today, there have been videos taken from news helicopters flying over Palisades......it's block after block after block after block of burned houses

Had some hope for a few minutes when they were showing these. It looked like some structures west of the Charter HS were still standing and that is where he is. But alas it was not to be.

Tough. I hope they are safe and were able to at least get some things out.

Sadly no. He was at work and his wife was out of town at a conference. So by the time he realized it was going to be an issue, the mandatory evac was in place so he couldn't get back in.

That’s tough. There are some sentimental items from when my daughter was around that no insurance money could replace. I’d be deviated to lose them. At least photos are backed up offsite.

"... movie stars like Paris Hilton..."

Thanks for that. I was in real need of a good laugh tonight.
In addition, the NFL game for wild card rams vs Vikings has been officially moved to a different venue at State Farm Stadium. Also various NBA Lakers players homes have been impacted by these fires; 🔥 and Hornets-Lakers game got delayed last night due to poor weather.

A lot of people only had so little time to get out of their house to evacuate. I seen only people brought their go bags, totes filled with stuff and even sit around the evacuation area.

Apple Store locations in the LA area (all stores except Beverly Hills, the Grove and Century City), Santa Monica, Glendale, Pasadena, Valencia and other cities directly in the vicinity of the fires 🔥 remain closed today and possibly in the weekend, or run on limited hours. Please call the Apple Store you are planning to go or utilize the Messages app on your iPhone to confirm the time of operation before you stop by… all other stores not affected by the wildfire like Brea and Orange County remain open.

This is a literature class. I took an English class last year, and from the course description, it seemed perfectly fine to take this one. The instructor even said I would be fine. I thought I would be fine. That proved to be untrue, as I felt completely lost and incompetent.

From what I can observe, this class is designed for a very small number of people, who also have deep historical knowledge. Though anyone is able to take it. It strikes me they should include at least two advanced English AND History courses as prerequisites.

Sounds more like the kind of class I would like. In Europe I will be taking a course on Spanish literature, and I can't wait. 😁 I hope this experience hasn't soured your opinion on literature, because it can be a wonderful thing to study. But certainly some of the classes I've taken require some foundation in literature study (one course I took last semester had only eight students in it). An advanced course with a narrow focus isn't something you want to just dive into unprepared.

Yeah, this was my thought, too. You’d be so much better off in it. Me? No way I could have ever done well in there. This class had five students, including myself. Now that I’ve dropped it it has four.

Now I am taking a class on Federalism in place of the literature class, which I feel much more confident in. It is much more research-focused, which is good.

Now I’ve got Musicology, Federalism, and Advanced Improvisation, which is a schedule I know I can handle.

EDIT: Actually, all my normal classes are small. Musicology has 10 students, Advanced Improvisation is just three of us, and Federalism also has 10. One of the things I like about this university—so small that classes rarely have more than 20 students.

As for me, I am very sick (again), which is not exactly an optimal way to start the term. I don’t think I ever fully recovered from getting ill in Europe, either. So in reality it’s been like two weeks already.

There are a lot of sick people, but I am also putting blame on the fact that I went from 70-degree weather to 10-degree weather in a very short time, which I’m sure didn’t help. I went to Federalism this morning because I was not willing to miss an entire week of classes. Otherwise I’ve been resting which is helping a lot.

Not been a very good week, honestly. Though I was told by the choir director at our rehearsal yesterday that starting in February, we’ll begin rehearsing our major work we perform with the orchestra. I very much look forward to that! But for now three pieces to learn for our next concert.

Where I used to work, the equivalent of HR would accept a complaint against you from a manager, but you weren't able to make a complaint against a manager. You had to make your complaint to the manager's boss, who then passed it on to a colleague of the manager to investigate. And guess what the result was...
And this was a Public Service organisation, not just some little company.

Being absolutely inundated with emails and other things that need my attention is honestly kinda pissing me off right now. I counted. 16 today. Normally l don’t have a problem with this, but it’s actually making me feel worse. Just let me get over this fever and have the mental bandwidth to deal with these 16 things before replying. I’m not in a position to try and schedule things and complete complex tasks right now.

Dude had you gotten in contact with your teacher/counselor on dropping the class?

Just got two more. 18 now. Why all right now, today? Why not next week? Also, it’s like, getting late, you know? Why send them at this hour? Why not wait until tomorrow, or, preferably Monday? Most marked as “high importance” in Outlook.

Don’t mean to be rude but from now on I am not even opening Outlook (and turning on Do Not Disturb) until tomorrow. I think, and hope, these can wait.

I hardly have enough energy to go to the dining hall to get food in a to-go box. But I need to eat so I’ll need to do it. That tells you something.

Was planning to head to Walmart tomorrow for some stuff (toiletries, more face masks, and snacks for the dorm) but idk if that’ll happen.

Yes. I dropped Literature and registered for Federalism.

Hoping everyone here in the Los Angeles area and the vicinity are safe.

And that everyone in this thread is okay.

I am good. Just thinking of everyone here and am very, very busy with real life things.

Thank you for being here and for being here for me too.

Nice to see you @kazmac and I hope you will feel better @rm5 . Currently visiting family on the US East Coast and heading back next week.

Indeed. I have numerous friends in or from LA, and it’s just a miracle that they haven’t lost anything.

Good. I prefer history classes over English classes if you already finished your English requirements at the bare minimum. Man is it hard to breathe right now?

Actually, here, there is no distinct "English" or "History" requirement. Just one, single humanities requirement. So the options are very open. I just happened to take both an English and History class. Actually, the options are very open in every major and program. Everything is pretty much player's choice. I love this, but it also makes things EXTREMELY confusing on paper.

Though things get very weird with the foreign language, natural science, math, and social science requirements. Most students have to do these, but not everybody. For instance, I am actually exempt from all four (though I've still taken political science classes). It depends on the program you're in. The College and Conservatory, despite being on the same campus, are treated as two separate entities in the course catalog—so if you are in the Con, you have very different requirements. But then there's also ambiguity around what constitutes "being in the Conservatory." Ultimately, it's just a question for your advisor. Hardly anyone really understands it. It's confusing but I've figured it out.

I think my iPad is broken.
It tried to tell me that Elon wants to get pregnant.
Well, not with me he won't. I'm well and truly spoken for.

I think I'll go and play with my fountain pens...

Social media is just pure madness now. Absolutely ridiculous what people are posting. I’m off it for now, except Discord, because that’s primarily actual, genuine communication. Life is so much better without Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit.
I am on over 40 forums here. I wish it was like the 2000’s
