I'm not convinced that Apple will put USB-C on the iPad Pros... not when they just released flagship smartphones with lightning connectors.

Your logic makes sense. iOS devices ought to have the same main port.

However, since the new Apple seems hellbent on doing things that don’t make any sense, I’m forced to conclude that USB-C is a near certainty on the iPad Pros. I don’t see any advantage to the move, which means Apple will definitely make the move.

I agree 100% with your logic :) But I think one advantage may be future things. USB-C seems pretty robust.

I am going to be greedy and hope for both Lightning and USB C ports. But this is wishful thinking at best.

For a more realistic approach, I can see iPad Pro 3 having USB C just because the Lightning protocol seem to have reached its limits for "pro" usages.

Personally I hope they go with usb-C because:
  1. Third party access
I wouldn’t have said USB-C necessarily means third party access? I would not be surprised if Apple locked down USB-C as much as lightning via software. Just look at lightning and power limitations which can be partially circumvented via a usb hub, I bet they do the same to USB-C which very quickly eliminates a lot of devices.

Apple should talk with Intel to have in their A series apline bridge to have suppofor TB3 otherwise they should keep lightning and bring vers2 with Gb transfer and offer usbc-lightning cable in the box

I’m excited about the external monitor possibilities.

I'm really curious what this could bring. We kind of have external display support with the HDMI adapter (or airplay) but it's really just mirroring and really not that useful. I guess what's different currently is being able to send video to a separate display without it taking over the iPad display.

But I wonder.. Will it be an expansion of the home screen? Similar to connecting a display to a MacBook? Or maybe a new API for apps to be able to take advantage of a secondary or larger display? A lot of potential.

We can already use video out to display a Keynote presentation on an external screen while the iPad is displaying notes to the person doing the presentation. They could expand on this to allow second screen support for other or third party apps.

Even with HDMI adapter and AirPlay already doing a decent job on mirroring, I am hoping USB C will do a better job at mirroring as I found the colors from HDMI adapter to be a bit off, and AirPlaying to an Apple TV 4K means having a more complicated setup and having to worry about network connections too. I had some frame drops and audio drops too on AirPlay if I use WiFi even though the iPad and Apple TV are right beside the router

Given the limitations of wireless ac and the SoC on the HDMI adapter (and not helping that the AirPlay protocol is not very well documented which makes understanding it harder...), I will not be surprised if the only way to get 4K 60Hz mirroring from the iPad Pro would be via USB C.
[doublepost=1539700896][/doublepost]By the way, I have been meaning to ask, how does USB C work on the Macbooks when it comes to screen mirroring and external displays?

I see so many people excited about USB-C but why?
I'm asking because I actually don't know what USB-C does better over normal lightening(?) or whatever is currently in the ipads.

Thanks in advance!
Did anyone ever ask What good is HDMI ?

I'm not a techy guy but if there was something we used to use before HDMI came out, then yes I would've asked the same question. My question was to compare lightening cable vs USB-C in case you didn't understand the Q

Last time I travelled, I took three lightning cables for my iPhone 7, apple Watch, and ipad, and a micro USB for my kindle fire, all plugged into a 4 way USB charger. Next time, I'll take 1 lightning for my iPad, 1 USB c for my galaxy S9, 2 micro USB for my kindle fire and galaxy watch, all plugged into the same 4 way USB charger.

4 cables either way.

You must hate checking bags through airports just like me with all my electronics!

Well for one thing the unification of all devices to one single cable type can be a huge deal to those of us who travel and want to reduce what we have to carry around with us.
How many USB-C devices actually out there where you can interchange cables? Unless you live on the bleeding edge of tech, not much. Most phones other than Samsung and some flagships still use micro-USB. Most USB devices like USB drives are still on USB-A. Heck, Microsoft Surface Pros don't even have USB-C port.

And believe me, I actually decided to dive in to USB-C, and today, I only have my Samsung phone with USB-C. Everybody else don't care about USB-C. Majority of plugs and external drives are still on USB-A. I even reconsider buying a refurbished 13" Macbook Air just because the move to USB-C is not as swift as everybody was pretending it to be (and Apple too).

Well, like the Hockey great Wayne Gretzky said, “You don’t skate to the puck, you skate to where you think the puck is going.” This has always been Steve Job’s & Apple’s philosophy. Even tho it might piss some people off... in the end, everyone will be using usb-c and think nothing of it. In the meantime, people will grumble. Yes. But Apple is skating to where the puck is going.

You can already attach an external monitor to the existing iPads via the use of a dongle. I doubt Apple would take steps to eliminate the need for a dongle.

It doesn't maker sense to connect an external display to a only touch based device to work with it. Maybe for presentations (beamer) or media consumption. Apart from that it supports only 1080p with this dongle....

That is why, given the current state of iOS, I don't think that the iPad Pro is going USB-C.

Oh I agree with that, and I don't condemn Apple for doing it, but the uptake rate of USB-C is just dread slow. Like I said, even Microsoft, the so called "cooler" company, have not put one in their latest products. Today, the only USB-C devices I have are my Samsung phone, so my USB-C cables are just "Samsung charging cables."

And I like said, I dived into USB-C, but once I swam back up to get some air, nobody else is on USB-C yet. I'm sure we'll get there, but for my own personal perspective, it's still a long way to go. Just ask the external drives companies. One of the reason USB-A gains tractions was the tiny USB drives, making external storage more convenient than CDs/Zip drives. Try finding one with USB-C that is not charging an arm and a leg. Even Apple is still keeping the old 13" Macbook Air on their lineup as they realise everybody is just taking their sweet time to go USB-C.

Besides, Apple already solved that with Airplay. And there are already lightning dongles for VGA and HDMI. Compare that to the number of projectors in real life using USB-C as input, practically none.

If they really going to USB-C there is maybe small hope that they allow indirect pointing devices (trackpads, mouse) in future IOS versions....

This is what makes that rumour about USB-C and external displays interesting...

USB-C does not seem like a mature standard yet, and put thunderbolt 3 on top of that and can get a bit messy, that said if there are any device type the port is perfect for it is certainly phones and tablets.
