What's stopping you?

Having read every article I could find since the keynote, 9 days ago, I have come to the conclusion that I will be waiting to replace my 15" PowerBook (1GHz G4) with a MacBook Pro until the following features are present:

1. More universal binary software - specifically Photoshop
2. 802.11a WiFi

My hope is that by WWDC in June both of these conditions will be met. If you've decided, like me, to wait, what's holding you back?

Personally, I'm waiting for a headless desktop, mini or whatever they call the Intel PowerMac. Had they released the Intel mini, I would have bought one already.

I thought so, too, but I went back to the specs page to double-check. 802.11b/g only.

802.11a seems to be dying I don't see it being added. B/G is by far the norm in the 802.11 world

What's the big deal with 802.11a compatibility? Isn't that pretty much on its way out? I would be more excited with future 802.11n compatibility...

They do have 802.11a it is just not supported. But Phil Schiller used it in the keynote, so it works fine.

According to this article on AppleInsider, the Intel Macs do have the ability to connect to 802.11a networks. (This article on Wi-Fi Net News seems to confirm this.) Why would Apple not advertise it if it works?

I just posted my reply in the current poll thread.

Basically, I didn't like the word I was getting about battery life, and the price is definitely not in my range. I wasn't expecting much anyway since it IS a PB replacement, and the PBs (while being fantastic machines and all that) aren't cut out for what I need to do. The other thing I didn't mention is that these are the first machines with this Intel chip. I don't want to jinx anyone who just bought their MacIntel machines, but I'm going to wait until I'm sure that the kinks have been worked out.

I've been using a G4 iBook for a couple years now, and I think I'll stick with it until I see a solid iBook replacement. And let's hope they stick with the iBook name.

What's holding me back is that I just slapped down $2500 for my current powerbook about 9 months ago! Can't keep buying the latest and greatest.
Besides, I'd be more interested in a new form factor. The current one is great but I think they should update it sometime soon. Its been around for almost 3 years now!
Also, I wouldn't buy an intel macbook pro until I was certain there weren't any serious teething problems. It wouldn't be the first time!

Well golly, I guess I haven't been keeping up on my 802.11 news. Yes, 802.11n looks very promising. I hereby revise my opening post to read "802.11n" rather than "802.11a"!

In 3 months almost everything will be universal. 802.11n won't be coming out until the end of the year and even then you also need another router. Until it is mainstream and more routers on free wifis have been upgraded it'll be 2-3 years. Same with BlueRay and HD-DVD. So buying one now and then again in 2-3 years would actually make sense. Or you'll always be waiting for the newest tech like holographic HDs, OLED displays, etc.

I don't think they are going to reintroduce FW800. It is on its way out. FW400 is here to stay but 800 not. The next revision will probably have a faster Superdrive but I am not sure it is worth waiting just for that alone. Just get an external one that can write 16x for a little over $100.

Whats holding me back from getting a MacBook Pro? The MacBook. I'm firmly in the MacBook=iBook MacBook Pro=PowerBook camp.

The 14" iBook is $1300, so if they introduce the new MacBook in that price range I will have to consider it. It is a potential savings of at least $700.

well it wasn't just the DL burning, also the speed reduction, if I could still burn at 8x, it would of made a big difference. Also I anticipate a price drop in the 15 inch model when the 17 inch comes out. I can't imagine Apple charging over $3,000 for the 17 inch, but I could be wrong. Plus, since most likely Apple will be moving back to 64-bit processors with the Conroe and Merom set, it does feel more like a transition machine. Even tho it probably won't help me that much, I would still like to see a 64-bit processor in my laptop, just due to newer programs that could be coming out in the next few years that would perform better with that architecture.

I understand your speed argument, I had the same. It's just that other things seem more important than 2x more speed to burn DVDs. Dropping the price... maybe but not by a lot, maybe $200. 64 bit won't do you any good unless you want to address more than 4GB of RAM. apps won't magically run faster...
