Hi everyone,

Some of you may remember my thread about aftermarket, passive GPU coolers for my Radeon 5770. Whelp, sadly, not only did the screws to hold the card in snap when I tried installing it, I realized that it wouldn't have worked anyway, as the thumb screws that secure the Arctic S3 cooler to the card stick out from the bottom of the card... and, as Mac Pro users know, there is zero space underneath their cards, because of the RAM cage. [I could have put it in slot #2, but it wouldn't have run at full speed like that]

Out of desperation (since my main GPU for the Mac I use everyday was out of commission... unless I wanted to put that nasty blower fan back on), I took out the passively-cooled HD Radeon 6450 from this Dell of mine and stuck it in the Mac Pro. And, to my surprise, it worked just fine! No boot-screen (as with my 5770), but Mac OSX and my Mac Pro recognized the non-flashed PC card and all of its video memory.

Now, since I am--at least, for now--accepting the fate of my 5770, I am looking for a better passively-cooled card to use instead of the temporary Radeon 6450. The 6450 is actually not as good as my 5770, and I really notice it. It runs the OS fine, but my graphics were smoother with the 5770. Anyone know a card (that COMES PASSIVELY COOLED) that will work without needing to be flashed? It can be an AMD card just like my HD Radeon 6450, but I'm looking for one that's better than the 6450. Note that I can't break out serious cash, so I want something mid-range. The 6450 was $50 on sale, back in 2013, so I am willing to pay that or a little bit more for a better card. I need to know for sure if it can work non-flashed, though, because I can't return a GPU once I test it... unless I go to Fry's and ask them to test a floor model xD But IDK if they can do that.

-Thanks

UPDATE: Currently running Mountain Lion, but will be testing out El Capitan soon. I need something that works OOB and w/o the need for web drivers.

Looks like a cool card... do you know for sure that it would work in my 1,1 Mac Pro w/o needing to be flashed?

It will work out of the box after installing the Nvidia web drivers, but will not show the boot screen.

I'm in a similar situation. I use my upgraded Mac Pro 1,1 for file management and general desktop use, so I don't really care how powerful the graphics chip is so long as the UI is smooth.

I'm currently using a flashed HD 4870, but it has a blower fan that puts out quite a bit of heat. I'd like to keep the room as cool as possible so a more efficient chip would be nice. I'd also like to reclaim the second slot where the blower resides for a ESATA bracket.

This would be achievable if I put a super cheap Nvidia PC card in, but then I would loose the EFI bootscreens. Anyone know of a magical ATI card that can be flashed that is single slot and cool?

If you don't care about bootscreens and the dual slot design, a passively cooled Gtx 750/ti sounds great for you though.

Do you have evidence of one working in a Mac Pro 1,1? I don't care about boot screens--as long as I can just pop the card in as soon as I take it out of the box and have it work under El Capitan. If so, I would be excited to pounce on this deal.

The 8800GT is a favored card; I actually have the 1GB version (most are 512MB). It's technically a GTS 250, or something along those lines, but the Mac recognizes it as an 8800GT. Honestly, this card packs quite a punch for its age. The UI and everything are very smooth; it's just that I dislike GPU fan noise. This thing is flashed and displays boot screens--comes with a power cable. It may be useful to me for now, as I go and try and get El Capitan up and running, but I could consider selling it. I am more in the mood of selling my Radeon 2600XT, though, as it will fetch me the same amount of money and isn't a card worthy for later OSs (for the most part). This card may run you some, though--even the 512MB version. This 1GB "8800GT" of mine goes for ~$150.

You know, how about going for the card that you suggested to me? I know you want boot screens, but a semi-good card with boot screens will be a bit expensive, as I mentioned about the 8800GT. You could keep your old card for spares and use that if you really need boot screens. Or, perhaps, you could get the one that you suggested to me and flash it: something I am too chicken to attempt myself, unless I can find a good, promising guide. I just don't have any experience in that sector. You may be able to, however, flash a card and have the boot screens kept. If not, search 'Radeon 5770 Mac Pro 1,1' on eBay. Some seller will pop up--his name is andy--something. He sells a good 5770 for around $120, but accepts offers. I have a 5770, and it's a VERY nice card for the age. I just hated the sound of mine, as the fan was worn out. This seller, however, makes sure his are in tip-top shape. Some may have blower fans, some may have open blades. It just depends on what he has in stock.

(Sorry if I led you on a winding path there. ;) I was coming up with new ideas while writing this response. Glad, though, that we've both maybe been able to help each other out so far.)

GTX 750 does not!!!! work OOB, will need Nvidia Web Drivers with every OS Update.

Why do you need a passive cooled card? A MacPro isn't that silent... Any card with good cooler (e.g. Gigabyte Windforce 3x or Asus DirectCU II) will be completely inaudible at idle and raise their voice just slightly when being pushed.

The stickied FAQ seems to suggest otherwise:

1) What OS versions will work?

In order to boot with an NVIDIA PC card, you need to have:
  • 10.7.4 with the 270.00.00f06 driver installed
  • 10.7.5
  • 10.8 and beyond
That is, all versions from 10.7.5 and beyond (including 10.8.*, 10.9.* and 10.10.*) will work with NVIDIA PC cards out-of-the-box.

Note that the Fermi generation cards work with Lion, but in almost all cases the Kepler cards require Mountain Lion. You may find a GK107-based card that boots in 10.7.5, but it is highly recommended that you use Mountain Lion since there appears to be much better driver support in that OS in general.

To be clear, the stock Apple drivers now contain basic support for all currently-shipping cards. This means that you no longer have to swap out the card when doing a Software Update to the next OS version. In all cases, it is recommended that you update to the corresponding NVIDIA web driver, as those drivers tend to have more bug fixes and/or performance improvements than the stock Apple drivers.

I read that to mean that OS X has a stock driver that will give you video output, but you should still update the driver for best performance. I think this still qualifies as "functional out of the box". If I'm missing something here, please
straighten me out.

As to what I'm looking for, I think you may have led me in the right direction. There are single slot 8800GT PC cards that can be flashed with a Mac compatible EFI. Hell..there's even one on eBay right now. This might be my best option.

The stickied FAQ seems to suggest otherwise:

Please read it CAREFULLY.

"GM107 (GTX 750) and GM204 (GTX 970, GTX 980 etc) need 10.10 and 343.01.XX.XX

Note that these Maxwell GPUs will not work with the stock Apple drivers, so you must install the NVIDIA web driver first."

I have one together with an Apple 5770 in an 3,1, which is technically almost the same as an 1,1.
Works like a charm, if you remember to only do system updates, when the web driver updates come up.

Except it's EFI64 and can run the latest OS natively.

Except that (cf "almost"), but that makes no difference for that matter ;-)

I kinda does because it's easier to passivley cool modern cards than older ones. If the OP would think out of the box for a second or two he'd realize that he can use the PCI shelf as the replacement for the heatsink on the passice AC unit and use screws instead of the exisitng nut/bolt arrangement that's provided in the kit but the OP want's a made for him kit..

3,1 has much better options

750 is an awesome card, with EFI it will have boot screens on 3,1 but will most likely never have them on 1,1

The EFI makes dealing with the need for drivers much easier. On 1,1 if you do things wrong the 750 will cause boot loop but all you will see us a lack screen and you will hear 'boing' every 30 seconds

Zotac makes a passively cooled 750, it is 2 slots wide. There are passive coolers for 8800GT, or there were

The dual fan maxwell cards will shut off fans when load is low, same behavior on AMD card would result in another 3 Mile Island.

will something like a 'Palit GeForce GT 730 SILENT 1024MB' work ok?
not shore about performance but the price seems ok, if you don't need much GPU power.
don't know how well it compares to the ati 5770 or if it runs on your OS (what version of OS X are you on 10.7?)
i think ati cards are the only ones you can flash apart from one or two nvidias like the gtx680 (can't see that air cooled).

do you need boot screens? or just want them.

Do you know of any passive card for 1,1 that will work without web drivers needed? For example, my passively-cooled Radeon 6450 just works 100% fine in my 1,1 and didn't need any drivers. I'm just looking for a better card, as this 6450 is weaker than my previous card.

My 1,1 isn't as silent as others have said theirs are, so, in order to silence the thing as much as possible, I am now using an SSD as my main drive (for speed reasons as well, of course), and want to do away with GPUs that have annoying fans. I'm sure a modern GPU will have a quieter fan, but still... I am just scarred by fan noise at this point. If I could find a card that works OOB w/o drivers, but DOES have a fan, I could settle with that if it IS purely silent. So far, the 5770 and 8800GTs I have had were beyond noisy--the loudest parts of my machine.

I'm running 10.8.3, but upgrading to El Cap soon. I need the card to be as good as my 5770 or better. I don't care about boot screens.

Actually, I cannot... if YOU knew what my arrangement was, you'd know that I cannot simply use the screws that I removed from my GPU. I need some sort of screw cap with the provided screws from the kit. The screws snapped anyway, so now I'm at a loss. However, even if I get replacements, I still will need long screws. I am considering using smaller nuts to fasten the included screws down, but I haven't had time for this yet.

Please read it CAREFULLY.

Good catch. My apologies for spreading bad info. Initial post edited.

The only relevant difference here between the 1,1 and the 3,1 is that the 3,1 supports 64 EFI...correct? If not, why are the options different?

Under full load?

Under full load, my Mac Mini 6,2 makes a much more annoying noise than my Mac Pro 1,1. The tiny fan is so loud when it steps up...and the unit still feels like it's going to overheat.

Well, my 3,1 also loops, if something went wrong. So what's the difference?

The 750Ti is so much better than the 5770, you shouldn't think too much about it ;-)
But you should keep a supported card on your shelf, when something goes wrong, e.g. upgrading the OS before updating the web drivers.

The 3,1 is able to utilize the EFI64 on the GPU thus showing a boot screen which let's you easily enter single user mode to disable the nvda drivers ;)
