Hi everyone,
Some of you may remember my thread about aftermarket, passive GPU coolers for my Radeon 5770. Whelp, sadly, not only did the screws to hold the card in snap when I tried installing it, I realized that it wouldn't have worked anyway, as the thumb screws that secure the Arctic S3 cooler to the card stick out from the bottom of the card... and, as Mac Pro users know, there is zero space underneath their cards, because of the RAM cage. [I could have put it in slot #2, but it wouldn't have run at full speed like that]
Out of desperation (since my main GPU for the Mac I use everyday was out of commission... unless I wanted to put that nasty blower fan back on), I took out the passively-cooled HD Radeon 6450 from this Dell of mine and stuck it in the Mac Pro. And, to my surprise, it worked just fine! No boot-screen (as with my 5770), but Mac OSX and my Mac Pro recognized the non-flashed PC card and all of its video memory.
Now, since I am--at least, for now--accepting the fate of my 5770, I am looking for a better passively-cooled card to use instead of the temporary Radeon 6450. The 6450 is actually not as good as my 5770, and I really notice it. It runs the OS fine, but my graphics were smoother with the 5770. Anyone know a card (that COMES PASSIVELY COOLED) that will work without needing to be flashed? It can be an AMD card just like my HD Radeon 6450, but I'm looking for one that's better than the 6450. Note that I can't break out serious cash, so I want something mid-range. The 6450 was $50 on sale, back in 2013, so I am willing to pay that or a little bit more for a better card. I need to know for sure if it can work non-flashed, though, because I can't return a GPU once I test it... unless I go to Fry's and ask them to test a floor model xD But IDK if they can do that.
-Thanks
UPDATE: Currently running Mountain Lion, but will be testing out El Capitan soon. I need something that works OOB and w/o the need for web drivers.
