I usually recommend Netgear. In my experience, I've had the best performance and reliability with their products. I have also been pretty happy with their support. I had a power surge blow up one of my wireless routers (and I told them this), and they replaced it on warranty anyway.

I wouldn't use D-Link products even if they paid me. I have lots of horror stories with their products and support...I won't bother writing them though unless people really want to hear them...lol

you seem to be contradicting yourself........

If your ISP does NOT care how many computers you hook up, then why would they cut off your access unless you register your computers with them

You are right. I wasn't clear. InsightBB wants you to register the computer or the first device connected to the modem. If it is a single computer, then they need that info. If it is a router, then they need the router's MAC address and do not need IPs or MAC of the individual PCs connected to the router.

Other than that, my ISP doesn't care. What they don't want people doing is using splitters to distribute internet access.

Most ISPs only charge extra for providing a second modem and additional IP addresses. Sorry to hear yours does not.

If TW is charging customers for running multiple computers through a router, I feel sorry for their customers.

A Linksys WRT54GS with DD-WRT firmware is the best router on the market for that sort of money.

The new version (version 5) of the G and GS does not support DD-WRT because it has less memory, and does not run Linux. If you want to be sure to get one that does, you have to get the GL. The GL is a G/GS version 4...basically Linksys put it out for the enthusiast that still wants to play with DD-WRT etc.

That said, I recently picked up the WRT54GL and tried the latest non-beta DD-WRT and it was really unstable. I'm using the official firmware at the moment, but I will be trying the latest beta soon (which apparently fixes this problem.) The DD-WRT interface is much MUCH better than the Linksys one (although the Linksys one is not terrible).

Is that the right one? I'm thinking of getting it.

Just to be sure, it's mac compatable and will work with my PowerBook G4 right?

edit: And I was also wondering is the range good? I'm on the third floor and the router will be on the bottom floor.

No, you'll need this one:

As for range....it all depends. At my parents house, I have awesome range...but in the place I'm renting, I can't get a signal from the back room to the front.

^thanks, I think I'll go for that one as they seem to have the best reputation.

Even if all else fails, and you can't get the 3rd party firmware to work the way you want....it's still a good router (from what I have experienced so far...and what people have been saying).

I'm still playing with firmwares...I'll post back with what I find of other versions. That documentation site has lots of info though...so it is a great resource.

If you can get to a store, it should say on the box if the WRT54G (or GS) is a v4 or below - they may have some old stock, and you may get it cheap. :)

If you're in the UK, have a look in PC World - reserve one on their website to pick up in store (that way you get the very competetive web price in-store), then see if the ones they have are v4.
eBay's another option - used ones on there are likely to be older, but as the seller.
There's actually one on there at the moment preloaded with DD-WRT.

I bought the GL because it is guaranteed to be the G version 4...and since I ordered it online (http://www.ncix.com), I couldn't look at the box. It was only 10 dollars more than the G.

If you can find a G version 4 though, you might save yourself $10.
