Hi all,

Hope you guys can help.

What’s the best way to clean fingerprint smudges of the iPad screen? It seems to get smudges a lot more than the iPhone, and doesn’t wipe off easy at all.

I recall being told that the special coating on the iPhone screen does not like harsh chemicals. I take it, the iPad has the same issue.

So what do you use to clean fingerprint smudges off?

Hope you can help

Don't use any products with alcohol, ammonia, harsh chemicals etc.

I use Ecomoist as it's a natural screen cleaner made in the UK. Used with a micro fibre cloth.

I see alot of recommendations for Whoosh! Screen shine on these forums. I've not tried it yet but it's my next purchase when I'm out of Ecomoist.

I believe the iPad Pro has some sort of coating that the regular iPads don't have. What kind of iPad do you need to clean?

I have been using the Whoosh! screen shine wipes & the provided microfiber cloth (purchased on Amazon) on my 13-inch Macbook Pro - iPhone 8 - iPad Air 2 - Apple Watch Series 3 for about 8 months now and am very pleased. I have also gifted it to friends whom also sings it praises.

I use a very soft dry microfibre type cloth, and that’s it. Works fine, and no need for chemicals.

*edit- you do have to spend a few extra minutes doing it, but it’s actually extremely satisfying!!
This.

For the long term, I highly recommend applying a matte screen protector. (the regulars here are probably tired of seeing me recommend this again 😆 ) Not only does it do a better job of cutting down on glare, it greatly reduces fingerprint smudges, and provides a more even resistance when using the Apple Pencil... and surprisingly, offers LESS resistance when using a fingertip.

without a matte protector, I've found that the resistance on the screen varies slightly when the Pencil runs through a fingerprint vs a clean part of the screen.

I use paperlike 2. It’s the single 3rd party ‘Hardware’ addition to my iPad that has improved the whole iPad experience to the degree it has.

I’ve actually been using a homemade solution of about 1 part 70% alcohol and 3 parts water on all of my devices for years. Just spray a light mist onto a microfibre cloth and wipe gently from time to time. Shouldn’t affect the screen if you don’t overdo it.

Here's Apple's blurb saying isopropyl alcohol is ok:

Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my iPhone?
Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your iPhone. Don't use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don't submerge your iPhone in any cleaning agents.

I use a microfibre on all my Apple products to remove fingerprints from the screen and keyboard (in the case of my MBP).

I found some 70% alcohol swabs on eBay just before the pandemic started. They use these to wipe your arm before you get an injection at hospital/doctor. Small square 1-inch by 1-inch pieces of disposable material packed individually.

I also use whoosh if I haven’t taken the device outside the house, so it’s less likely to be contaminated therefore no need for serious disinfection with IPA alcohol. 😄

Also if it’s simply a few smudges i just do a quick wipe with a micro fibre!

The apple website says to damp a lint-free cloth in water and clean it that way. But yea the screen gets dirty too easily, its frustrating and picks up dust and other debris so easily.

I was a firm believer and was very much in the camp of people who strongly believed that the iPad Pro screen is the Most resilient of screen, be it Smudges, Scratches or any other dust or anything. If you use some sort of cover on it you dont need anything special. But my that opinion started shifting when I realized and heard from so many people here that the iPad Pro screen is a Finger Print Magnet. This may sound Hilarious but it has been over a Year now that I have the 2018 iPad Pro with me and in this whole big year I have never ever typed on the iPad Pro Full Screen Keypad why ? Because It pisses me off too much to see those finger prints on the screen that too at the center of the screen. Till now what I used to do is if I had to type 2-3 lines I would used the Swype/Floating Keyboard or Do Speech to text or if I have to type something long and extensive I would just connect an external keyboard. But Now things have completely changed my Perspective. I saw some of the iPad Pro Screen with a Tempered Glass on them and Boy ! They look so pretty I mean not taking the aesthetics of the iPad Pro away from it and saving you from that torture of being paranoid of having thousands of Finger Print Marks on your screen and then going through the trouble of cleaning it. It is best to apply a High Quality Tempered Glass on it. End of Story and Peace of Mind for Life. Totally worth it !! And I thank @sparksd in helping me change my Perspective towards Tempered Glass Screen Protector. They are such a in thing !!

I have made a resolution now, whenever going forward when I would buy an iPad Pro in life the first thing that I would do is have a Tempered Glass Put on it. It is so so much of your Life becoming easy and Stress Free.

Moral of the Story - Please install a Tempered Glass on your iPad Pro Screen.

You can just exhale on the screen, which will bring some steam to it, then wipe the screen with a soft cloth, like those coming with sunglasses, etc.

May I ask which one you got? I’ve never installed a screen protector on the 7 or so iPads I’ve owned, but having an Ipp11pro for the past year, I completely agree with you on how horrible the smudges are to remove. I use a pencil, so it would also be nice to not worry about having the screen perfectly clean to avoid scratches either. I don’t really need a paperlike that wear out the tip faster, as I like the feel of the pencil on the smooth glass just fine.

Ok so I have got the JETech one you can find it on Amazon. So I dont claim that installing a Tempered Glass would completely eliminate the Finger Prints on the Screen as with the Screen Protector also you may have some Finger Print Marks. But it is far more easy to wipe it off and keep doing it again and again versus on the Native screen of the iPad Pro. Plus the added advantage is it prevents your screen from having any scratches, cracks and dents.

Also there are some tempered glass screen protector which claim and advertise that they are finger print resistant.

I resisted the screen protector route for as long as I could but my 2020 12.9 IPad Pro is truly a fingerprint, dust and debris magnet. I purchased Whoosh and it was a major upgrade from just using a damp microfibre cloth. Finally just ordered AmFilm glass screen protector from amazon and really dont regret it one bit. The glare is a bit annoying but not having to constantly worry about dust causing micro scratches on the screen (from using the Apple Pencil as well) or being able to just effortlessly wipe away fingerprints outweigh that annoyance.

This is exactly My Story. Ditto what I felt and realized and went with the Tempered Glass Screen Protector Route.

Long time heavy iPad user and never had a screen protector- but ready to go the matte route I think. Which one do you use, @sracer?
