Why? I’m considering buying it as a refurb, but it looks quite similar to the Air, albeit with Face ID.
What the Pro has that the Air does not:
  • 120Hz ProMotion
  • 600 nits brightness (vs 500 nits)
  • 128GB base storage (vs 64GB)
  • Camera flash
  • FaceID (vs TouchID)
2018 Pro gets all this stuff, plus you get 2 more performance cores and 3 more graphics cores, which makes it still more performant with the A12X than the A14. And you should be able to get it cheaper as well.

If you decide to buy an iPad, 10.9-iPad Air 4 and 11-inch iPad Pro, which one ?

I'm in a similar boat here as well. Quad-speakers are the only thing in the 11" Pro that I want from the Pro. And landscape stereo speakers removes at least a little bit of that need. Otherwise, I don't need LiDAR, I don't need a camera flash, the added refresh rate. I might want 512GB of storage though (as media consumption would be the main purpose of this iPad). I think the narrowed price gap between the two makes the 11" Pro seem like a better bang-for-buck. If they kept the same pricing as the third generation Air, I'd probably lean Air more than Pro. Even then, I'd lump in an Apple Certified Refurbished 2018 iPad Pro in here too (as that'll be even closer to the Air; though I'll bet the added 2GB of RAM will make a difference in the 2020 model).

I’m using iPad Pro 2018 11”. Gotta say that, A12X is no slouch. Very powerful and very capable. iPad Pro 2020 11” doesn’t add too many extra stuff imo, but performance wise still crush iPad Air. And Face ID is as amazing as it mostly is.

How does the Pro crush the Air 4 performance wise when the A14 is the first 5nm chip size in the world, and has faster single core performance than the A12x, with about equal multicore performance with 6 cores vs the A12x/z 8 cores??? The pro only outperforms the A14 in GPU performance.

where did you find the performance benchmark information?

EDIT: never mind, I found it. Single core slightly better on the A14, but multicore still slightly better on the A12X. Plus the obvious GPU advantage. Pretty much as you said.

I would only get the air if it was a great deal. The colors are cool and that will draw plenty of buyers but 120HZ display is one of the best things about the iPad Pro.

Am I missing anthing?

On Rene Ritchie's YouTube channel, the Air indeed has a slightly thicker bezel. It's slight, and imperceptible if you're holding them separately, but noticable if you compare the two side by side.

My understanding is that the Pro has 4 (probably a bit better) speakers, brighter promotion display, and a processor better suited to heavier lifting. Even the 2018 iPad Pro is worth considering.

Info is here.

A12X
  • 10% better graphics
  • 13% better multicore

A14
  • 33% better single core
That single core performance is pretty crazy impressive. Those Firestorm cores are pretty good! That‘s the dillema though, right? Not much to choose from between the two, probably even for longevity, and the A12X is still a better choice for graphics intensive work. Especially for creation given the 120Hz screen connected to it. This is why the 2018 Pro is a real option, especially given the price they can be had for.

Yes I agree the iPad Pro 2020 is overall more powerful than the iPad Air 4 all things considered especially for intensive tasks like video rendering and gaming. The Air 4 with its 5nm A14 chip however will likely perform the everyday tasks faster (33% faster single core performance) like opening safari pages, emails, loading apps etc, and still perform multi core intensive tasks to a level that breathes right down the Pro 2020’s neck. But Pro owners shouldn’t be worried as when the next version is released with the A14X, then the performance difference will be like Air 3 and the current pro, and they will feel much better about themselves again.

Heavier users that want media stored locally on device would need more, at least 256GB if not more. I find that 256GB is a bit cramped on my Macs, but have never even really had to think about storage on my iPads after going 128GB+ on them since the first iPad Air.

Yep, one reason I'm upgrading is that 128 doesn't cut it for me as I keep a lot of music and photos on mine. 256 for me.
