whats the point in hacking with the SDK on the way?

why would you want to hack your iphone just to get apps on it. the SDK is coming soon and should provide many authentic apps.

i can understand hacking it to get off AT&T. but why would anyone hack it for the apps. just wait a little and you can have the real deal without screwing your iphone over.

same goes for the ipod touch. in fact this applies more to the ipod as there is no motive for changing from AT&T.
 
The only apps that can screw your iPhone over are the ones that free it from AT&T. The other apps that are out are only boons to the abilities of the iPhone and run little risk of damaging your baby.
 
Yeah as long as Apple has to approve the apps, there is no way all the apps in Installer will be making it through. But my "dream" would be to have a jailbroken and SDK iPhone. Im also hoping if the developers can use the SDK, there wont be any more bugs, so we will have perfectly jailbroken iPhones with perfect programs!!
 
are the apps gonna cost and be over itunes or something and not as easy to install as using the installer?
 
The thing is, people reckon that loads of apps will be out pretty much the same day as the SDK! The truth is, developers will have to take time making the applications using the SDK, getting them signed by Apple, and finally giving us the ability to download and use them! - Noting the fact that there will be many bugs if they rush it all. ;) So that's why Jailbreaking is good because..... we already have the apps available to us until the SDK &&&& people have made the apps.

Aren't you jumping the gun a little bit here. The SDK isn't even here yet and you speak of it as if it's a roaring success. What if Apple only releases the iPhone SDK to select partners? What if apps are only available through iTunes and must be Apple approved?

It's really still a bit to early for all this talk. There is a good chance that Apple won't give you certain apps and that people will still demand them hence jailbreaking for apps.

Because unless you're clairvoyant, you cannot guarantee what pre-SDK apps will be available. I love seeing all these assumptions about apps being released post-SDSK. Believe me, there will be countless posts complaining about this app or that app that hasn't been developed via SDK.

What about the developers that had the SDK seeded to them end of 07'? One could assume they will have something ready for when it is officially seeded.

uhh what?

the beautiful thing about a device like the iPhone is that it has a 'Restore' button and automatic backups. so in the event an app 'screws up' your phone, it'll take you 20 minutes to get it back to the state you were in.

the only thing that could monumentally screw it up would be the first wave of unlocks. these modified the baseband and basically destroyed it, today on my 1.1.3 unlocked phone as soon as i restore it my baseband is ready to go. sure i have to unlock it again but i'm okay with waiting 10 extra minutes. :)

there's also no guarentee that legit apps WON'T screw up your phone. how many times have you installed third party software on your mac or pc and had everything go crazy? or how many silly people run norton on their macs? it's the same deal. software will never be perfect, legit or not.

I'll believe it when I see it.

If I waited for Apple to release the iPhone in my country, I still wouldn't have one.
 
Because we are getting free apps with jailbreaking and with the SDK, knowing Apple, we will have to pay for apps and i dont know about you guys but id rather get free apps
 
SDK apps will be Free - 6 bucks. If you cant afford that, get a job ;)

Installer will be great for themes and stuff like that.

That is true, however the SDK that was given to them wasn't still ready and was still in BETA. Also, the SDK was only seeded to a small number of developers. So expect a tiny amount of apps ready with the SDK release.

Who is saying i cant afford it? Just because i can afford it doesnt mean i am going to buy it, especially when they will be free with jailbreaking. If you would rather spend 6 unnecessary bucks on something you can get for free be my guest

I agree with you there. I will only be paying for things that are really worth it and are made by a half-decent company. Other than that.. I'm not going to be wasting that much money.

I'm sure that somehow a group of cool people will find a way to get the programs for free onto the iPhone or maybe seed them using BitTorrent or something. ;)
 
honestly, the only apps i'm missing is a pdf/txt reading program and a text editor that syncs with my mac. and they will come soon via the sdk. and i'm sure they will be cheap. so no hacking for me. not worth it for me.

what apps do you need that justfies the hassle/risk?
 
What hassle/risk? I enjoy tinkering in the inner-workings of the phone so its fun for me, plus I get great apps along with the fun that I have. I love the ability to do exactly what I want to with my phone. Not to mention, games are great for long bathroom breaks and the other apps I use, (mobilechat, iradio, mobilemoney, websearch, mobilefinder, sketches, bossprefs) are amazing things to have on the go.

Are there any risks?

Is it much of a hassle when after 3 minutes you get... loads of native apps and games? - Hardly ;)

Just think a few weeks ago I didn't have a Gameboy Advanced, a NES, all my favourite games, AIM, Guitar, Sketch, and so much more ALL on my iPhone!

And all it takes is another 2 mins to restore it and I can have a normal iPhone without anything hacked :) - Perfect. ;)

why not hack it? how much of a risk is there? i just hacked mine a couple days ago and i have a legit att contract. why you say? because i can and wanted to. i dont know whats to come with the SDK so why wait? I had no problems hacking my phone and it is working perfectly fine. plus i have some sweet games and such to play now. have fun waiting;)

What's the point of climbing Mount Everest?

I guess people are hacking their iPhones for the sake of it. Get these programs up and running without having to wait for the SDK, start "customizing" their iPhone.

I also wanted to wait for the SDK but is there even a guarantee when it will come out? It may even get delayed. Who knows? Delays happen all the time. And when it does come out, how much more lag time until we see the first few programs?

Besides, with ZiPhone out, customizing your iPhone is now WAY simpler.
 
If I was a gambling man... I'd say Apple leaked the SDK to a small handful already, in a beta test of sorts. And when it's all ironed out and these "beta testers" have their apps ready, it will all be released... small handful of apps and all. Of course you'll have to purchase them on iTunes, but we knew that already.
 
do you think someone will bring out an app that will allow us to use our custom ringtones as a sms tone, or wont this ever be available?
 
I assume apple will have an app or two out when the SDK becomes available to show what people can do with it. Perhaps they will develop iChat or something along those lines. I don't know why they'd set the date for February 29 and then have it just appear online with nothing else available for it.

At minimum, I expect it will be released, along with iTunes 7.7 and iPhone firmware 1.1.4 or 1.2 with iChat and flash included.

Summberboard, iPhysics, gpSPhone, NES, TapTapRevolution, Tetris, iSolitaire, ApolloIM, weDict, MobileFinder, Make it Mine, iAno.

And then I can restore it and have it completely new and fresh again :)

NOTHING will screw up if you follow established directions.
