What's the Point of VOIP over 3G?

voip over 3g data test in kb/mb/gb

i just made a test in my iphone

i reset all the data traffic

test 1:

made 1 minute call fring/skype over 3g calling to skype laptop wifi
total data used in 60seconds was 280kb (sent /upload)

1 hours has 3600seconds
280kb x 3600s = 946800kb/hour = 924mb = 0.9gb

conclusion : using iphone over 3g talk-talk of aprox 1 hour it will spend 1 gb of 3g data.

test 2 :

total data used in 60 seconds was 6kb (sent /upload)

1 hour has 3600 seconds
6kb x 3600s= 21600kb/hour =21 mb = 0.02gb

conclusion: to spend aprox 1gb of data wifi-wifi i have to use the fring/skype for 45 hours talk-talk
 
3 mobile in the UK:
get a free pay'n'go sim > place in phone > download the skype client > make unlimited skype calls forever with no top up > if you want pay £5 (~$7) for 1GB of data to use on anything (dont restrict you on youtube etc.)

total: zero to £5 per month (depending if you want the data) try and find a better deal

There is some bad math in this post, check the numbers.
 
Yep I use skype for all my international calls. Yesterday my brother who is stationed with the army in Korea called me and I answered over 3g using fring and I could see him on my iPhone. That's so cool.
 
i use it because my parents live on the can/usa border.... when i go there i get 4-5 bars from usa & 4-5 bars canada service.... usually the roger/tellus/can signal wins... so i just fire up my skype app (using wifi though)....

on that note....

anyone know if there is a way to STOP roaming for voice? i know about the "no data roaming" option in settings, but can't figure out how to stop roaming for calls??
 
I've been using skype over 3g for 2 weeks. My iPhone is jailbroken so I use 3g unrestrictor.

The cost for skype plan is 2.95/month unlimited calling.

The quality has been superb and use it for long calls.

O2 uk have no data limit so it obviously makes sense. I am always going upwards of 5gb a month and I once phoned to check and they said they would never charge me for data unless I was tethering. You can use as much as you like with o2uk and they won't charge you.

It's the same with AT&T. Skype over 3g goes on data.

Skype over 3g has been superb, so good if AT&T offered data only I would jump on it.
