What's the thing you like the least of OS X?

I have a Mac since Leopard was released. I've loved every second of using a Mac since then. However, there are things that with time and new updates, have realized that I don't like or maybe Mac messed with.

For me there are two things that I don't even get why they exist they way they do:

1: Having to empty trashcan to delete USB contents.
I don't get why there is no way to delete USB content (and recover the space) without having to delete the entire trash can. You could probably say, well, if you have something in your trashcan, it means you don't want it. However, I have made mistakes and deleted something without realizing it. Mistakes can happen and do happen.

2. Mission Control.
This one is small, but very important. I like the concept of Mission Control but it's not well executed, in my opinion. Since exposé, I'd always wanted to group windows by application, and that's something we got with Mission Control. What bothers me a lot, is that there is no way to see EVERY window from a stack of windows in an app.

For example, I have 8 Safari windows, they all get grouped in a stack. So there is no way to see what is behind the first two. If you swipe up with two fingers, they expand a little bit, but it just shows the 3 or 4 windows at the top, leaving the rest at the back with no way to see them.

For me the best, easiest and fastest way to fix it (and I don't know why Apple has't done it) is to make an app exposé within Mission Control when you swipe up with two fingers in the App stack. That simple. Instead of "expanding" few windows, the behavior would be to show every window just like App exposé.

I know you will say, you have the option to have it work as before Mission Control, but then I would lose the "grouped by App" that I have wanted since I had my first Mac.


Those are my biggest gripes with Mac. Well, along the very poor video format compatibility of QuickTime (by default), but there's pelican, etc. I know they are very small, but I am not a power user or developer or any of that kind. I just enjoy using my Mac, and got tired of Windows. I like the ease of use of Mac.

What are you biggest complaints or things you don't like about Mac OS X (any version)? Have they been fixed with later versions, or did new versions bring new complaints for you?

For the Finder --

1) No cut and paste support for moving documents around.

2) Column view doesn't adapt to file name length.

for number one, just choose copy and then go to paste and hold option for the paste option to switch to "move item here"

In mission control, you can press the spacebar to expand the windows bundles you want. and you also can make them not bundled together as default in system perferences.
 
I hate how the MacOSX has grown into a mere consumer's product.
Only this morning, a message pops up my screen saying there's an update. Should I do it now or later? Not even a "More Info" button?
Why I don't like to open the App Store? It doesn't even have navigation buttons.

I can go on, because the traces of dumbing down are all over the place.

My next hate for the MacOSX is about the social media stuff, that too is all over the place. Can I have an option to delete every single one of those?

Are you saying you sometimes put files in the trash that you don't want to delete? Why would you do that?

That "More Info" is basically click anywhere within the notification banner, or as you call it the message pop up - then it will launch App Store to show you more.

I understand your sentiments of Apple's OS dumbing down obsession, and I have to agree... It is all Apple's ploy of attracting dumb Windows users aboard, hence DUMBING DOWN...

Just imagine that stupid resize windows from all sides. I hated it so much. Just yesterday I thought one app window is obstructing my view of another app, so I clicked somewhere on the sides to move it away so that I can have a clear view from both apps. Instead of moving it away, it gets resized even wider, blocking the entire view... :mad: I would prefer to resize windows from one corner alone - Bottom Left Corner...

so why should we always have to empty the trash after delete the files from usb? that's the problem. if i delete a file it mustn't has place on usb (like windows os)
 
The whole installing an app downloaded from the internet routine.

Mounting, dragging into applications folder, then ejecting the disk.

I've used a Mac for over 3 years now, and it still bugs me.

I think you misunderstood what this guy was asking. He is saying he put the items in the trash, because he doesn't want them. If you place it in the trash on your USB drive, then take the USB drive and place it in your WinClone machine, Parallels Desktop, etc... There will be a hidden folder named ".trashes" with the files inside. This takes up space. On windows, if you delete a file from a removable device, it is deleted immediately. He is suggesting, with good reason, that the same should happen on the mac. I don't see anywhere that indicates he puts files he wants to keep in the trash.

There is a solution to this problem, however, its not the best solution. (I say not the best, because it does not always work correctly.)

You can install CleanMyDrive, by the creators of CleanMyMac. The app is supposed to remove the ".ds_store, spotlight, and .trashes" files from the drive when you "properly remove" the USB drive. I have found that it only works most of the time, and sometime just does not do what is supposed to do. I deal with this daily.

That's window by window, though. Not all of them at the same time, like in App exposé. Also, since some windows are stacked perfectly one behind the other, there is no way to see them and select them (or hover the mouse and press space).

I know of the existence of App exposé. I have it setup as a hot corner. However, when I am working with several apps at the same time, Mission Control is needed, and being able to see every window of each app when grouped would be very convenient.

I use app exposé a lot when I am only using one app and have several windows of it. The issue comes when I have several apps with several windows of each.

Right now I have it so that every window of every app is shown in Mission Control (just like how it worked before Mission Control was introduced) but then, they don't get grouped by app. However, the issue I want to get fixed is that we should be able to see every window of an app, when they are grouped.
 
It seems like you're asking for it to be both ways--you want them grouped by application (App Expose) but you want to see them all (Mission Control).

Try this...go into App Expose, then hit the tab key a few times. Does that help you?

Ok, I must admit I did not know that. Never occurred to me to press tab in app expose.

The reason I would like Mission Control to behave like that, it is the logical and intuitive way. That was the first thing I tried when I used Mission Control for the first time.

The solution you just gave me is great, but I don't know why it would still be even better the way I am thinking of. If only I could have a way to make Apple fix that tiny behavior of Mission Control.

I'm glad that tip helped. I am of the opinion that Apple puts a lot of thought into how their products/features are going to be used. Then they often just pick the way they think is best, rather providing every possible option. That being the case, I don't see them ever going back to the old way.

One more thing...if you hold down the shift key while you're tabbing, it goes in reverse order.
 
Sleep/wake issues.
Wake on LAN is not really supported. It's possible to wake your mac via LAN but every other events in your network wake up your mac too. My nMP even wakes up when I plug my phone in and goes back to sleep 30 seconds later.

I read through hundreds of forums/threads and couldn't find a solution. I had an imac late 2013 and now a nMP. Both struggle with the WOL enviroment and woke up several times ( i found them running 2 or 3 days later... )

Can't be good for the hardware to wake up 20 times a night and going back to sleep immediately.

I just want my nMP to wake up with a magic packet. Nothing else...

Finder seems to be really outdated sometimes. There is no "folders first" option and if you resize your windows the files don't automatically arrange themself to the new size.

There is also a bug when accessing shared Windows folders. Sometimes it keeps loading and loading and loading...and finally Finder crashes. I know transfer files to windows SMB's in parallels due it kills my routine.

Mavericks finally upgraded the multi-display functionality but it's not even close to perfect yet. I always have finder on my second monitor. Sometimes it's back on the first i.e. Spaces change sometimes depending whether your monitor is on or not etc.
Windows does this WAY better unfortunately...

some little issues with iphoto and itunes... still not in love with them.
