This is very true. However, video is moving in the direction of being completely digital, at which point LCD will be more accurate, as it will reflect the units people will view the video on (other than theater screens, but this may change some day as well).

But yes, agreed completely; 5 years in the printing industry and currently having to color proof cd layouts, CRT is far more reliable, though nothing beats an Iris print (except a cromalin print, but that's a bit pricey)...
Hmm... I understand that pro users would want the matte screen so it isn't reflective, but why wouldn't they want vibrant colors?

Like if I'm a video person, why wouldn't I pick the glossy screen? It's not like I'll be hanging out outside rendering frames and what-not... I guess I'm just worrying why they wouldn't get one, as I'm considering getting a new laptop to take to college, and I'll be deciding between the two screens at one point. Besides the obvious extra glare from the sun, are there any other disadvantages to the glossy screen?

I don't really like the look of the black one that much, to be honest.

My next Mac will likely be either a Macbook or a mini, but if it's a Macbook, it won't be the black one. I might have been swayed by the fact that it doesn't get dirty like a white one does, but for an extra £90? Forget it.

This makes me so uncertain what to do. The black one looks great, the white one looks like my old iBook; ugly (kind of, I don't like the shiny white). But I don't want to be screwed over by Apple and pay an extra ~$150 for a black one. I'm not even sure I will buy a computer now.

Thank you Apple.

Mark my words: the majority of MacBooks being sold right now are black.

They will be the most common ones you see on campus will be black.

Apple is charging more because they can.

doesn't matter guys.
I went to the apple store today... to purchase 1099 Macbook for my brother..., and guess what? When i got there, the black one was already sold out.

I know.. 150 price difference is just insane, but there IS demand for it.. and our beloved company is exploiting it.

But black is so... not Apple. Ew.

Except for all the old Powerbooks.

I really like the black MacBook, not sure it's worth the extra money, but I like it.
I don't like the glossy screen though. Having used a friend's 17" Vaio it was very annoying when sitting with your back to a window.

I think we'll find once they start shipping that the material and finish on the black Macbook is completely different to the white Macbook. It is evident from the photos that the white Macbook has a glossed finish whereas the black is definitely matte.

There's no-way Apple could sell a black Macbook that scratches like black nanos do. If anyone thinks it's simply because Apple thinks they can charge more for black because it's black they've got rocks in their head. Look at the coloured iPod minis, the pink and silver were by far the most popular and they were no more expensive

My company designs and engineers our own specialist product and you'd be very surprised what costs more in terms of material finish, durability and look.

Huh??? What "business" are you thinking of? Black with occasional red, blue or green keys OK (Thinkpad), metallic gray is OK, black & gray is OK, but not white??? I'd like to see you explain to your boss why you need to spend an extra $150 bucks just to get the black color. How old are you, 14? Have you ever worked in your life?

The thinkpad audience, white notebooks make them look unprofessional, why is it whenever anyone disagrees with me they have to make personal jabs, this is the first time anyone has called me 14 it just bugs me that everyone takes things so personally and feels the need to get emotionally involved just because they disagree with someone, if anyone is 14 it's you.

When you look at the close-ups of the black MB, it actually looks pretty cheap. i think Apple made the top model black with minimal hardware differences so people would spend money on something which is different.
My moneys going towards the middle model.

I wonder if the black one is kind of a replacement for the 12" PowerBook. The last couple of revisions of the old iBooks and 12" PowerBooks meant that the differences between them were minimal. For every person who I heard saying "I need audio out" or "I need screen spanning", there was someone saying "I'm getting a 12" PowerBook cause they look so much better than the iBooks".

In a way, with this, they've done the same thing by making black into a status symbol, so the guy who walks into a meeting for a presentation doesn't have the same computer as the managing director's kid.

You've made an insightful comment Hector: business users are inherently conservative. I caertainly *have* worked in my life, buying large quantities of IT hardware for business, and I know this to be true. You don't need to have wasted years working in an office to figure this out though.

However the other poster has a point too: businesses will not pay $150 more for a colour option. What matters is the bottom line, not aesthetics in most office-bound work environments. PR, advertising, marketing and high income customer-facing operations are a different kettle of fish though. The right image can be important here.

So Apple is now offering a colour choice, which it hasn't done in a few years with their laptops. I'd like to hear some rational justification for why the black costs more e.g. it's special carbon-nanotube paint that increases heat dissipation and reflects EM radiation, while proving irresistible to sexy women the world over.

That would make me feel much better about pulling the trigger yesterday on a black MacBook!

Anyway, I hereby name it the VaderBook™ You heard it here first peeps ;)

Apparently they are - Apple's MacBook product manager has said as much to Macworld. I suppose they reckon they can get away with the price premium for PowerBook 12" users "crossgrading".

Can anyone tell me if the black MacBook comes with a white Apple remote?

I can't even begin to describe to ridiculous I think it would be to pay an extra $150 for black if they were too lazy to make a matching remote.

What I said had nothing to do with glossy or matte, it had to do with LCD vs. CRT. I use a CRT and the colors are plenty vibrant; the color SPECTRUM of LCD is different from CRT, and if further from print accurate (or human eye actual)...

For a while after it was released, the black iPod nano was outselling the white by a factor of 8 to 1. Probably fearing the same thing would happen to the MacBooks, Apple put a brake on it by charging a premium for the black. Now if the white outsells the black by 8 to 1, they might have to reconsider.

Buy a white one.

simple.

Or even simpler, don't buy one at all. That's the choice I'm making. Had they not offered a white one at all, I'd have bought the black one. When I saw the identical white one was $150 cheaper, it turned me off from Apple as a company... maybe for good, I don't know yet. We've always known Apple gouges their customers with sky-high margins. They've made it painfully obvious this time by proving they can shave $150 off the black's price and still make a fat profit. I'll just continue with my 3 year old 12" Powerbook, thanks.
