You know if Apple really cared about privacy they should have released iMessage for Android and cut Facebook off in a brilliant move. Sometimes you can make a gesture for the greater good - iMessage for Android could be just that. I bet it would be a huge hit.
Don't see that happening. It's all about the ecosystem

And a huge lawsuit from the aggrieved company/ companies... baseless (when one considers the greater good) but valid lawsuit, nonetheless.

Damn that's a brilliant idea!

iMessage was supposed to be a new SMS standard to be adopted by providers, but none of them were interested in Apples approach to texting (encrypted was the main culprit) so they created what's now known as iMessage, making it essentially the default way of texting iOS to iOS... completely cutting off providers from the texting experience.

Kind of a gigantic middle finger to providers and probably why it never made the jump to other ecosystems. Don't fear though, Google is around the corner with RCS (the actual new standard to replace SMS) that'll sooner or later come to iOS too (because it is, well, the new standard that has to be adopted at some point)... it'll only take a few more years I guess?

Until then, WhatsApp dark mode seems to be right around the corner (including general iOS 13 features like haptic touch support). Only took them over half a year (if you count beta testing phase). What a pathetic organization honestly.

Facebook like Google is really inconsistent when it comes to supporting new features like dark mode. Both Telegram and Signal support dark mode. WhatsApp's resources and development team are probably far larger than either Telegram or Signal.

I haven't used Facebook for about 3 years now, but from what I can remember, the Messenger app was always first to get new features. I don't know whether it is because the Facebook app is massive with an old code base and maybe WhatsApp is poorly structured or designed which makes changing to things like dark mode a significant undertaking. Facebook Messenger came after Facebook and WhatsApp so they probably had a chance to architect the app in a better way which made future upgrades easier.

I am still waiting for WhatsApp to support the iPad. I have given up waiting now and try to get friends to use Telegram or iMessage instead.

Telegram is a very good app. It has supported dark mode for long before iOS had dark mode. It used to have an automatic feature that would change to dark mode depending on brightness levels. It also had a scheduled dark mode that would put the app in dark mode between times selected or sunset to sunrise, etc.

Telegram now uploads contacts to their servers. Questionable move. But, at least you can delete it from their servers - apparently - who can know for sure if that option is just a placebo?

On the other hand, WhatsApp has started uploading to Facebook servers too without giving an option to delete contacts from their servers. I use Facebook for business pages, and nothing else. I would not want my contacts up there and had chosen to not sync. But if I use WhatsApp, my contacts are with them anyway.

I really do not understand how the world seems to be okay being raped of their privacy by Zuckerberg and giving up their precious contacts to him without even their knowledge. There is no sign that this rape is going to stop anytime soon and/ or that people will wisen up and choose to use platforms that do not rape their privacy this way.

I have used Telegram for long, but unfortunately the world over we have WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger as the de facto messaging apps people use. I am trying now to work my way around with SMS and Telegram. Those who want to be in touch with me will do with Telegram and calling, others will sporadically use SMS or calling. I am fiercely protective of my privacy and my contacts in today's world where digital fraud and tracking is beyond rampant and there seems to be no way to escape it. So I try to minimise my exposure.
