WhatsApp has a lot more brand recognition in areas where it's popular, and it's been around a lot longer. If anything, messenger should merge into WhatsApp.

I only use WhatsApp when travelling, aand to keep in touch with some foreign exchange students that we have hosted over the years, but it's a nicer app than Messenger and I wish it was more popular here.
Agree - WhatsApp is super popular here in the UK, around Europe, and many other geos. I realise that it doesn't seem to be that popular in the US (and possibly) Canada, tho.

Rebranding it would cause an outcry similar to the Twitter / X debacle...

I don't like everyone using Zoom; FaceTime and WhatsApp need to move quicker.

Also, I always feel audio calls on FaceTime are crystal-clear compared to WhatsApp.

Now make an iPad app. Doesn’t the head of WhatsApp want that to happen, considering he has an iPad himself?

The new Mac app is a Catalyst app. It's still a bit weird but it's a big improvement over that horrible Electron app.

Zoom is good for more than casual calls. Its customer base is enterprise based. Being able to share screens, web conference, annotate, take control, breakout rooms is beyond what Whatsapp and any E2E service can implement quickly.

WhatsApp makes sense for quick 1:1 or small group calls (call mom, call grandma, show them you're standing at the top of a mountain).

UK is part of Europe of course.
<sigh> of course. I live in the UK. I know this. Maybe I should have written "WhatsApp is super popular here in the UK, all around Europe, and many other geos". But most people know what I meant. And I'm sure you did, too! But please forgive me for making this grave mistake

I stopped using the Mac app as soon as I found out it was updating every few days, yet nothing was ever changing.
I don't know what is Meta up to, but this continuous 'updates' are not right.

While I don't have any intention to use WhatsApp, it's good to see developers realise that native apps are the way to go.

Non-native apps like MS Teams, Slack, Discord, etc, all come with performance and usability costs. Hopefully more devs catch on to this.

Slack... that's the biggest culprit here, it makes my computer's fans spin like crazy.

Totally superficial but the dumb pun in WhatsApp's name has always made me cringe. I wish they'd rebrand it to Messenger and merge with Facebook Messenger which is already interoperable with Instagram DMs.

They tried this and got in trouble. When FB Messenger and Instagram DMs merged Meta right away announced their intention of doing the same with WhatsApp but cited technological differences at the moment. The EU claimed privacy issues about it and said they would not allow it. It seems like there was some agreement at the time of purchasing WhatsApp that prevented Facebook from absorbing it into the other services.

No, it runs Native on Appe Silicone.

Hi, I'm happy for you. But my computer is telling me otherwise.

Alt Title - Popular social media company releases their Social Media iPad app for Mac OS.

Who will dare to install it?

I expect Meta to suck in any data your OS allows. On iOS, that is well contained (assuming you are sane enough to answer No to all API permission dialogs). On MacOS, not so much.

I installed What’sApp on my M1 when I just got it and like within 6 months it got corrupted. Tried everything fix it and gave up. I just use it on my iPhone and occasionally on Windows.
You probably should try using the native app, not the crappy one they had before:

I have been using the native app since it was available to get from TestFlight and gotta say it makes a huge difference performance wise and battery life wise. So I am happy to see it's getting pushed to the public. (Now I can update family computers with native app as well!)

the UI looks new {per the beta i used to work} but inside the info it's shows it's Universal version.
Also - all my stickers not synced on the new version as it's was on the old app. so annoying.
