You don’t need to wait that much on each try.
After starting a manual backup, you should wait a few seconds….if it’s still on preparing, just force close the app and try again after toggling Include Videos

You mean toggle off the toglle on again, force close the app and then try again?

Porthole0676 had luck with a simpler version of the procedure:

Try a manual backup, if a few seconds pass and it’s still on “preparing” > force close the app and try again

Repeat as necessary. It should work after a few attempts.

Do it quickly (not sure if this is important but’s the way I do), don’t wait between attempts.

I wonder if having it "End-to-end Encrypted" made a difference. I have it disabled 🤔
Also tried both and I also deleted the iCloud backup as a first troubleshooting step (something that you did as well).

I restarted the iPhone (when I first noticed the issue) and disabled and enabled WhatsApp iCloud permission on iPhone settings. None of this worked but maybe changed something.

Other than try to do the procedure quickly, not sure what else I can recommend.

I tried all of that too, to no avail but, your suggestion to force quit and try again quickly seems to have worked.

Thanks!

I've been trying to find a solution to this since the beginning of December! I'd read about the force close remedy and had tried that, but with no success. However, I've just tried again doing it quickly and it's worked! Thanks for much, Diego!

I’ve tried many many times really quickly, no luck, unfortunately.

It's been two days since i have issues with the backup on my XS Max, to transfer it to the 14 Pro Max, last week the backup was ok (~25GB)

The only way "Preparing" progress is by keeping WhatsApp on foreground

When "Preparing" is completed, uploading stucks at random GB, lets say 9GB/25GB, suddenly it goes back to, lets say 2GB/25GB

I have the latest WhatsApp and iOS updates

Hi everyone! I just created an account to comment here: I also had this problem when trying to back-up my WhatsApp to transfer it to my new phone. I found that the solution was to put my SIM card back into my old phone before doing the WhatsApp backup.

I transferred everything else to the new phone, including the SIM card, before doing the WhatsApp backup and had the "preparing" issue. Once I put back the SIM card, I immediately had no problems. I think this is the root of the problem, but it's interesting to see that some other people were able to find their own unique fixes just by mucking about in the app. Perhaps the issue arises in other ways, too.

Anyway, hope that helps anyone who's trying to back-up in a similar situation.
