Whatsapp is a really well designed and thought of piece of software.
They excel at what others failed.

Plus it's pretty different to other AIM, beejive or facebook apps. Whatsapp is not a chat app, it's a messaging app aimed at replacing SMS between users of the app. You don't need user ID's or password, all you need is your telephone number to authenticate yourself and that's all.

I understand that all of these apps are different. I never said any of them were the same. Just wondered aloud why nobody mentions ANY of the others ever.

something like whatsapp should go around reintroducing itself again. Cross platform should really win the debate between imessage and whatsapp. Still people have dumb phones and thats where both fail and SMS is still needed.

The other issue is with many different "free" texting options not everyone will choose the same one.

Whatsapp needs to advertise

Seems to me like they've already started in this forum.

Another point. I'm on AT&T and my friend is on verizon. I can talk and surf and he cannot. This morning we tested sending messages while on a call. While on a call, my send button to him was blue. Meaning the message would go trough as data. But that means he would not get the message until after the phone call was over. On his phone the send button to me was green and I would receive the text while we were both on the call. This is a disadvantage over how things were before iMessage. Because now I cannot rely on sending him a message NOW.

WIth whatsapp things wouldn't be any different as it too uses data and he can't use data while on a call, but with imessage there SHOULD be the expectation that if data is down, SMS will be used. NOT !

well to be honest and in my case, I don't use any other "chat" or "texting" app.
From time to time I run the facebook chat app, and in the past i've used Beejive a lot but not any more - i'm pretty bored of IM.. Whatsapp, email, and facebook cover all of my messaging needs. (and now iMessage :)

WhatsApp since I can message my friends with Blackberries and iMessage is extremely boring vs WhatsApp and BBM.

I really like whatsapp for texting friends abroad. It really works much better than imessage in my opinion. Plus, I love that it has an option to monitor how much data is being used.
