Really...?

I literally included a link to my search in the post you are quoting, wherein the first hit was:

Gurman: M2 Pro Mac Mini and no further Studios ?

It's not a rumor. It's speculation. That's why nothing else came up with a Google search.

The rumor of a "one and done" Mac Studio were from a Gurman report

About the Mac Studio, Gurman suggests the first-gen 2022 model will be the only version of the premium Mac ever produced. He explains, "The bigger question for me is if the Mac Studio will ever get updated. It gives the impression—and this is just a gut feeling—of being a short-lived Mac because of its price and niche market. I don't see the purpose of having both a Mac Studio and Mac Pro."

I believe Gurman is wrong here. In order to make a Mac Pro, you must make an Ultra SoC since the Mac Pro will use both the Ultra and 2x Ultra SoCs based on all available reports. If you make an Ultra, you might as well update the Mac Studio. It's not hard to replace just the SoC. Updating the Mac Pro but not updating the Studio makes zero sense.

Rumor, speculation, whatever...

You asked where I saw the "source" and asked me to provide a link (even though I already did), I gave the same info again...

I did not spend the time to dig it up, nor do I plan to; but I know the first I read of Gurman saying the MAc Studio was a one-and-done was on a front page article right here on MacRumors...?

See my previous post about a Three-Headed Headless Desktop Lineup from Apple...!

There are some rumors that the Studio is a one and done. I think a lot depends on how much the Mini is updated at the low end, and how the new Mac Pro comes out at the higher end. Too much of a squeeze between the two, and I can see the Studio being left to whither on the vine.
Not sure where that idea comes from. they obviously put significant effort into designing and building it. I covers a part of the desktop market that Apple wasn’t really servicing well. At the very least, incrementing the processors is a low life upgrade that would keep it competitive even if you didn’t do another physical redesign.

A new Mac Pro is likely to be in a whole other price class from the Studio. I would expect Apple to keep the Mini at the low range with an M2 upgrade and at most an M2 Pro upgrade sitting just below the base Studio.

Even though I'm hoping for it, there is no way 16" M2 MBP is coming in 2022.

Is this the consensus?
Why not? It would be a relatively simple spec bump. Apple used to regularly do spec bumps like that about every year. Sometimes more often. That was back when Intel version upgrades were more meaningful. Now that they control the whole stack, it would be even easier for them to plan and execute such a spec bump.

Good memory, Mike.

Good sleuthing, Boil.

Man, this Gurman guy is a major buzzkill.

The computer I want (Mac Pro 8,1):

"I don’t believe the revamped M2-based Mac Pro will be released until 2023"

The computer I've been trying to convince myself I'd grow to like, if not love (Mac Studio):

"About the different M2 chips, Gurman thinks the Mac Studio could be a short-lived product since he doesn’t seem “purpose of having both a Mac Studio and Mac Pro,” since they can’t be very similar and appeal to the same niche of users."

I might as well just keep my ENIAC until the dust settles. ;)

see my comment above… I know I’ve read something to this effect, but can’t find where now.

that said, there is precedent. The Mac Pro 2013. The G4 cube. Etc.
2013 Mac Pro wasn’t planned to be one and done. They have pretty much apologized for the state of the Mac due to this. I doubt they will make big mistakes again.

ARM just announced new ISA revisions, including a more flexible scalable matrix extensions and other goodies. In the light of AMX units getting a significant rework in A15/A16, who knows, maybe it's a sign?

No worries, Mike.

I only asked because I've been trying to get my head around the idea of buying a non-expandable, non-upgradable Mac Studio. When I saw your post about it being rumored to be a "one and done" I didn't know what to think. :)
You can find almost any rumor on the Internet. Maybe it came from Q!

Just seeing this comment from Gurman re: short lived Studio. That would be too bad. At $2K base price Studio Max appeals to people (like me) who would never think to buy a Mac Pro. I think for $2K one is getting a hell of a machine for non-pro uses. Overkill sure, but a machine that will last for years.

I do see how the more specced up machines start to creep in to Pro territory - I mean just look at the refurb store for Mac Pro and ask why anyone would buy those vs. a Studio Ultra.

I’m not sold on that particular bit of speculation. Apple obviously put considerable effort into the engineering of the MS. He seems to think that the Mac Pro would replace it in the market, but the Mac Pro has in recent years been a much more expensive machine aimed at some pretty niche use cases and industries. If anything I would expect the new Mac Pro to be even more expensive leaving that middle range of the market free for the MS. Hell, Apple could treat the new Mac Pro as a one-and-done if it doesn’t garner enough interest by missing expansion options.

Also the 2013 Mac Pro is not a one and done in the same sense that the Mac Studio would be (if discontinued) because it was just one model year of the Mac Pro, a product which still continues. The Mac Studio is a product unto itself. A better example of a one and done would be the iMac Pro (although one could argue that it’s almost just an iterative iMac with suped up internals).

Sure, but the Mac Studio is from March of this year. I don't see a spec bump after only seven months.

Certainly not because it needs an update but if Apple has the chips ready to go and are moving things to the next gen, it might make sense to include the MS rather than leave it on the old gen.

I don’t know which way Apple will go but I don’t think it is likely that MS is “one and done” as was asserted.

No they expected the 2013 Mac Pro to continue. But it did not. Apparently there are rumors already that the Max Studio is already done. This didn’t happen with the Mac Pro 2013. Let alone ~6 months after release.

And those rumors are based on simple speculation by one analyst with no supporting details.

I was a Mac user for about a decade, then switched over to Intel to get touchscreens. Looking at a Mac Studio for video production work, but was wondering if we are expecting the M2 chips to be brought over to this system in the next few months or more likely we will get it in 2023?
I see that happening nearer to end of 2023 or sometime 2024. It took Apple ~2 years to move from M1 to M2.

I see that happening nearer the beginning of 2024 or sometime 2025. It took Apple 12.9 years to discontinue the iPod Classic.

IIRC, doesn't Apple have a history of spreading out announced changes over multiple Tuesdays? Might that mean we'll seem M2 Pro/Max laptop upgrades next Tuesday?

Apple has broken with tradition of a Tuesday keynote/announcement.
