Hello, I have been thinking about moving to iPhones for quiet a while now, but I really hate that ugly notch design. Could you guys please tell me your thoughts about when will Apple drop the notched design?

Note: Please don't try to convince me about notch being not important. That's not the question.

Edit: According to your answers, we will have to wait approx. 3 years. Then I would like to ask you, do you think it's a good idea to buy an iPhone right now and sell it when notchless models come out? If yes, which model should I buy? Even though my main use cases are media consumption and SSH connections, I probably won't be able to milk this phone more than 2 years.

When they decide that people don’t appreciate the extra screen.

My guess would be a couple of years. Don't care when because I don't even notice the notch. Not trying to convince you.

For the notch to be completely gone... probably 2023. I figure we will have at least 2 more models with the notch before they completely remove it.

The rumours (if I am not wrong) were the 2021 iPhone might have the notch removed from the Pro Max. It’s possible they might delay it by 1 year...so 2022.

I’ve seen many forum members say this, and I don’t get it. I’m ok with the notch as a necessary design compromise for now, but not notice it? Every time I look at my phone, I don’t get as much information as I would get if there were no notch (such as battery % and the Bluetooth headphones icon). How can you not notice that?

My 12 Pro has great battery life. I honestly don't have to care about the battery percentage. The few times I do I open control center to see what the value is. I honestly do not even "see" the notch in 99% of my daily usage.

No matter what they do on the phone people tend to focus on the middle of the screen most of the time that’s why the majority don’t “notice” the notch, as in don’t pay attention to it. But subjectively speaking it’s a bad design indeed, especially now that touch id would’ve been far more preferable there’s no point in face id and keeping the notch.

OP, I think next year the big selling point will be 120hz display so the notch won’t be gone until 2022 at the very earliest, but much more likely around 23-24.

Hopefully they at least shrink it next year. The design is really starting to get outdated. Prosser says it will be Narrower but we'll see, they all look ugly except for Ultimate tbh. I want touch id back in some form as well.

Think differently, remember? You're getting more information than if the top were a giant bezel.
Again... I’m not trying to be anti-notch... I think it’s a fine compromise for now. But of course I notice it every time I look at the screen. It’s a black space where everything else is filled with content.

First time notch user with my new Mini, first thing I did was install black wallpaper for lock screen and main screen, and toggled Dark mode. That fixed much of the issue, including (so far) YouTube and Netflix. Before I got it, I hadn't read about this option, and was wondering why Apple didn't make a black background header option for notch phones, at least those phones with OLED screens. That would kill all the moaning completely.

Well.... not all. Some would then complain about not getting the "full screen" size. From my experiment with Netflix and YouTube, they are both operating in a rectangle and do not use the rounded corners anyway. I know I've seen pictures of full screen video, just haven't been able to do it on my phone yet. Perhaps some very oddly proportioned videos might. I did measure a Netflix feature film screen size and it came to 4.9 inches. Still better than the 4.7" of my 6S.

No one here knows how long the notch will be around because no one here works for Apple, and those that do are under NDA and won’t tell you anyways. Might as well grab one from another manufacturer.
