I think everyone is being incredibly shortsighted. The iPad could do all of these things today. Of all manufacturers, Apple could make it happen. These are not extraordinary requests. They are basic, fundamental tasks that could be performed by machines far more limited, decades ago. The hardware in an iPad, iPhone, or iPod is already similar to or better than that in some desktop computers of 15 years ago. The only thing holding back the true potential of these devices is capitalism. It's good marketing to limit the devices so that you have anticipated features to add with each years revision. It's good business to segment your product lines with unique functionalities. The iPad could easily equal a MacBook Air today IF it would be profitable to do so.

Apple's priority is increasing profit, and they do that by strategically developing and marketing these devices in a way that most effectively exploits consumer demand.

When some other company figures out how to do these things & puts it out there for consumption, Apple will too.

Apple is (IMO, more so than anyone) notorious for just giving enough each year to string the consumer along while being the fastest to leave their previous customers behind.
In other words, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple could do all of those things now. But, unless competition forces them to, they will parse it out in small doses.

Apple is wildly successful & has offered mostly great products that everyone is trying to copy.

But I'd love to see a poll along the lines of:

Do you think Steve Jobs would rip out your liver & leave you on the side of a dirt road?

Hmmmm, I seem to be getting a bit off topic, don't I?

Oh well, this is one mans opinion &/or rant, thank you & goodnight.:D
