When will iCloud get upgraded free storage?

Photostream isn't a good place to back up photos since they get deleted from Apple's servers after 30 days, if you do a restore then you're never getting them back.

I've explained this:

No, I meant that after 30 days, the photos in Photo Stream automatically delete from the server but not the device.

So, photos upload to the server, then any devices that connect to Wi-Fi within 30 days will receive the photos, devices that don't make the 30 day window won't be able to download photos. Devices that have successfully downloaded the photos will keep them stored past the 30 day window, if you delete a photo from one device then it will delete from all (Even after the 30 day window).

PhotoStream on a Mac downloads in the background just like Calendars/Reminders do, so no worries in having to open iPhoto within those 30 days, just need to make sure you connect to the Internet within 30 days.

Another thing is that PhotoStream doesn't back up to iCloud like the camera roll does, so if you restore a device then PhotoStream will only have photos that are <30 days old. And, one last thing, photos uploaded to PhotoStream are compressed (And I think resized) so if you want pics in the highest quality then it's best to transfer them from the camera roll, rather than using PhotoStream.

I have restored my phone when 7.1 came out and did a fresh install. All my 1000 photos from photo stream were downloaded.

Click "Albums" at the bottom and check Photostream there, because "Moments" includes everything so I'm guessing that everything in the moments section is also including the camera roll.

Well I've got no idea, this was definitely not the case for me when I got my 5s and then a replacement 5s a few weeks later.

Well I'm not upgrading! If they had upped it to maybe 7GB, then I'd feel more happy about buying the 20GB for the sake of iCloud Drive, but if they're keeping it at 5GB free then I'm not upgrading...

Doesn't bother me really. I was just curious. Obviously if you are using the service now you thought it was useful enough to use it before. If you're running up on the space limits for it I don't see why you wouldn't pay a nominal fee to keep it going.

It's just the fact that I have loads of Apple devices, I've spent thousands on Apple, but they haven't figured out a way to give us who have spent loads a better way of more storage.

As other people have suggested it should work on a per device basis, not one big pool and those who have more devices just have to spend even more to keep their stuff backed up. I'd be fine with buying the 20GB, but if they're not going to improve the free storage then I'm not going to support it.

It's not 'free', that's just a marketing word, it's paid for when you buy the device(s). If it was free then you wouldn't need to buy anything to get access to it.

Do you know what Dropbox is? Dropbox is free. You don't need to buy anything directly related to the service to actually use it.

The money I've spent with Apple was never for a Cloud service, it was for a device, a song an app, etc. They started a service, like Dropbox, that has a free tier. It's 1.5x larger than Dropbox's offering.

And yes, I know what Dropbox is. I use it everyday. I would never, ever complain that they've given me something for nothing. Especially when I use it. That would be in poor taste.

I was on MobileMe, then I did actually buy the 10GB for iCloud and decided it wasn't worth it throughout that year.

Edit: But now that there's iCloud Drive I would like to use it in place of Dropbox, but I'm not gonna use it if they don't have the decency to up the storage. I've got about 10GB on Dropbox from referrals.

I'm going to disagree with you there. It is pretty clear all over the Apple web site that the iCloud service comes with a new device.

At the most recent WWDC presentation Apple spent quite a bit of time touting the great features of iCloud also, and did more than imply this is one of the reasons you should use an Apple device.

It's a value add. It's not a combo meal. The service is available to use or not. It's not required to operate the phone. It's opt in. You also do not need an Apple product to use iCloud.

Meaning that when you pay for the phone, iCloud is not part of the bill. iCloud, unlike your phone, can be taken away at anytime.
