Yeah for sure tomorrow - I guess they're going to wait till the M4 Ultra/Extreme Mac Pro of the Pro Display XDR 2, but man am I excited to see it. Shame a nicely specced M4 MBP + XDR2 will be north of £10k :(

If they don’t add tb5 support this years models will be outdated immediately.
As the owner of a M4 Max and a work Windows laptop with TB5, I can tell you that this feature alone is not going to make a laptop outdated immediately. There is so little that can take advantage of it, except for driving multiple high end monitors, that other things will cause issues...I for one cannot afford multiple copies of the high end monitors that would need the TB5 connection, and no storage devices I have been able to afford events the data bandwidth of TB4. The effective data handling of my M1 Max and M4 Max system are not so different. As others will say, bragging right, expensive cables, and nothing much more.

It is precisely for those monitors that I am content Apple have added TB5 to their Macs and will continue to do so throughout 2025.

Not sure if and when they will add it to the base M series chips, but ubiquity helps both users and manufacturers. Regardless, I expect those monitors to begin appearing after Apple releases their Mac Studio and Mac Pro with TB5. And then I’ll upgrade my M1Max.

Exactly. I have a 2021 Macbook with Thunderbolt 4 and the fastest most expensive devices I connect are using Thunderbolt 3 like a 10GbE NIC and a couple more things. So I do like fast accessoires and connections and use TB equipment where many people usually just plug in a USB4 SSD and call it a day.

The people who actually require TB5 over TB3/4 are going to be very, very few, for some time to come and they can buy a brand new Macbook right now and use TB5 just fine. Anyone else will be happy with their M1 Macbooks as well as the M2 and M4 ones.

I mean it did but then there are very few TB5 modules/peripherals at the moment.
Then again I felt TB4 was ridiculously fast [2-4x faster than standard USB-C 3.0 or 3.0 2x2]
