In a way I'd have to agree, the iMac shares the same issues as any laptop, when it's dead or too old you chuck and you chuck the screen with it.

Apple's been doing this since the days of the Lisa. That's 23 years, before there were "laptops". We should all expect this by now.

The performance difference between Conroe and Merom is negligible.

It's the same core with a different Front Side Bus.

3 things:
1. FSB matters.
2. Conroe doesn't max out at 2.33 Ghz.
3. It's cheaper, even at faster clockspeeds.

They are the exact same chip, that come off the exact same wafer. Merom is just voltage- and speed-binned.

The Front Side Bus difference isn't really translating into an earth shattering performance delta between the two.
The real difference will come from the clock speed delta between the two chips.
And yes, Conroe has the advantage here topping out at 2.93Ghz with the Core 2 Duo X6800.

But those clock speeds are reserved for Apple's professional line of desktops, the Mac Pro.

I highly doubt Apple are paying MSRP prices for Merom. I strongly believe they get a hefty rebate.
