When will the next Mac Pro be announced

My last Mac Pro purchase was the last PPC G5 Apple made. i'm tired of most software updates now requiring Intel Macs but don't want to go out an buy a new Mac Pro if the next version is just around the corner. It looks like we're about 40-50 days from the average length of time between Mac Pro model updates. Just wondering if anyone has a better estimate of when new models will be announced.

Can anyone give me a very basic summary of the kind of speed increases I'll see when I go from a top of the line G5 PPC Mac to say an 8 core middle of the road Ghz latest generation Intel Mac Pro? I expect a great leap in performance. Am I correct?

We don't know when there will be an update, there haven't been any rumors, but if I had to guess I'd say around WWDC which will probably be in June.

Basically you will see a huge increase in speed if you are coming from a PowerMac G5, although you say you have a Mac Pro which is intel, but either way there will be ahuge increase in speed from either the first intel Mac Pro, or the last PowerMac.

Any intel mac will be much faster than a powermac for most tasks.

Thanks for the info. I only have a G5 PPC. Can't wait to update to the next edition of the Mac Pro. Can wait till next year but hope I don't have to.

Then again, maybe by then the SSD costs will be a lot more reasonable. I like the idea of putting my applications and system files on the SSD for fast startup and application launching.

It depends on your current machine but you could expect a five fold increase in performance, probably more...

You could always use a smaller SSD rather than one supplied by Apple. OWC, Intel, OCZ are popular brands. SSD refreshes are happening now.

Easy advice: Buy a Mac Pro today if you are running a G5. It will be another world in speed, and you don't have to wait a whole year for the next one. And, buy as much RAM as you can afford.

Axe the Mac Pro and perhaps we'll see a higher frequency of films or TV shows where Macs are considered bad. Probably not attacked directly but obviously enough. Or at least they may not show Macs as much on screen.

I don't think it'd be in Apple's best interests to annoy the film/TV industry.

Bummer, I was hoping for a summer update with Lion!!
I am kind of waiting for the next update to get a Pro which is more computer than I need but just want a tower in an Apple....and I have worked plenty of overtime and want to splurge.....anybody else get like this? <grins>

Mac Pro is an industry standard in many industries. While I'd imagine the sales have been somewhat reduced by better quality iMacs, there is still a massive need for the Mac Pro.

No way will they axe it. They are completely tooled out to churn them out so they have no need to drop it when all they need do is change internals as they become better.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'd really like a Mac pro. Not because I'm going to use all of the power it has but because it's a very nice machine and I feel like spoiling myself

Then why wait ? Imagine getting run over by a bus tomorrow (which I don't hope for you) then you would have never experienced the thrill of booting up your very own Mac Pro.

For the price of the Mac Pro it really should include some more stuff such as SATA III. If you are buying the machine not to upgrade it every few years but to keep for a long time then something like this could be important to you.

If you have any Power Mac G5 the Mac Pro is a huge leap in performance. I only have a 2.26GHz 2009 version and when I upgraded from a dual 2.5GHz G5 I was shocked at the improvement. Light day to day tasks like watching a DVD or video whilst browsing would use 30-50% of the G5's overall processing power but on the Mac pro it's around 3-5%!

More strenuous tasks like H.264 encoding that would take hours on the G5 and totally max it out - generating huge amounts of noise and heating the room now take 35-55% of the CPU and around 20-35 minutes (depending on duration of the footage) without any noise increase and hardly noticeable heat. I can even play 3D games with encodes in the background. Even the single threaded performance is better despite the lower clock speed and has yet to be a noticeable bottle neck - I can only imagine what those 3.33GHz 6-Core machines are like!

Increase the RAM as you can multitask massively on these machines. Install a better Graphics card if your needs require it and think about an SSD boot drive to eliminate the hard disk speed bottle neck if you like.

Unless your making money from this purchase, grab a refurb with what you can afford. If you have the bucks, grab a westmere system. Will last you a long time.

I NEVER play the waiting game with Macs anymore. If I really need it at the time, I buy one. I've seen refreshes take much longer then expected, which happened just last year.

Yeah +10. There's really nothing to upgrade the Mac Pro with, no parts. Unlike Apple, Intel is pretty clear about their near-term future roadmap and expected dates of delivery on new tech. They may speed bump the base configs from dual hex @ 2.66 & 2.93 to dual hex @ 2.93 & 3.33 (sorry dunno offhand what the other MPs are in the current lineup). But nothing too exciting.

Whatever happens there isn't going to be any great fanfare, or an event like the iCrap gets, or even a 5 second mention at WWDC. They'll update the Mac Pro page and the people who need 'em, will notice and everybody else will continue ignoring it. The release will not even get a 2 line text mention on Apple's front page.

Going from a G5 to any Mac Pro is going to be like night and day, waiting until Q1 2012 (which may be Q2 or Q3 even, the 2010 MP's were what, 6 months later then expected?) is kind of waiting for the sake of waiting. Apple's priority is, in order of importance: all the iCrap, their laptops, the iMac, the Mac Mini, a revolutionary new and improved LED blinky light on their magical battery charger, and then whenever they get around to it, the Mac Pro.

It'd be nice to see LightPeak in the hypothetical new Mac Pros (Actual Release Date: Q4 2012!), but somehow I strongly doubt that any new tech is going to be introduced in the MP, it'll show up in the MBPs and iMacs before MP ever gets it. OTOH someone will release a LightPeak card 3 weeks after the tech is available.

The last thing to keep in mind is, so far as I know, the BuyersGuide buying guidelines and historical length of time between release dates, is counting backwards to a mythical time that predates all the iCrap, and even the iPod, when Steve Jobs used to go on stage and demo the new Mac Pros and proudly proclaim that they'd pass 3.0GHz Real Soon Now! Uhm, those days are long-gone, and my stock thanks Steve for that, while my heart curls up into a fetal position and cries tears of sadness and empty neglect. <blowing nose>. Anyhoo, what I'm saying is, the Buyers Guide as it relates to Mac Pro release dates, is a little off ... like by about a year almost at this point, 9 months certainly.
