Nobody knows. People are saying/hoping for Sep-Oct but I doubt it. Arrandales are out Q1 '10 and Apple will likely use them.

Why?

Next February. There are four threads that this discussion has gone on in the past week. I see no reason why:
A. We need another one
B. Why their would be an update

Ars Technica's website reports that AppleInsider is touting some new iMac features . . . but the poll they set up on the blog is hilarious:

What will the new mystery iMac features be?

- Blu-ray support

- SD card slot

- SSD drive

- USB 3.0

- It will actually be the iTablet

- New iSight lens that will remove 10 pounds

- Built-in Steve Jobs health meter

- Whatever everyone else voted was horrible, I have a better idea in the comments

Lol, here's hoping for blu-ray and sd card slots

Look at how long it took Apple to do the last refresh to the iMac line, which happened in March this year.

Do you honestly, think about it, see them doing TWO revisions in the space of 6 months (if you believe the nonsense September rumour doing the rounds?).

Apples refreshes on its iMac and macbook rage are hardly regular and dont follow any real pattern, so no one knows, although it is fair to point out no new significant processing technology has come about so the best you can hope for is a minor speed bump, although the current technology could really do with Bluray and a HDMI out, try and broaden its appeal and bring it upto speed with some competitors...

Seems this mornings rumour of integrated bluray support in iTunes 9, traditionally released in September with new iPods is only going to add fuel to the fire...

Here's my thinking...

1. Many people here have said that the iMacs will not be upgraded soon because there are no significantly new mobile CPUs.

2. There have been suggestions that the iMac's design will be changed in the new version.

3. A new design change could allow for a different kind (non-mobile) CPU.

4. Therefore, it's entirely possible that a new iMac with a significantly upgraded CPU could be produced soon.

Only a full design change would allow anything but Penryn, Clarksfield, or Arrandale in the next iMac.

I would argue that there is little sense in assuming that it definitely won't occur when there are some indications that it might.

I'm not assuming it definitely won't occur. I will believe that we'll get Hollywood movie viewing support from Apple when they tell us that they've added Hollywood movie viewing support. No sooner, because nothing else is the truth.

Well, something could be true even before you find out about it.

Nevertheless, the OP asked when we might see new/updated iMacs. Many people said here said that there is little to no chance that this will occur soon. My point was that there is indeed a chance that we will see new iMacs in the fall, especially if there is a case redesign in the works. Your comments consisted of a declaration that you don't know anything about the future; that doesn't really add too much to a discussion which is primarily speculative in nature.

I have to agree with Tallest Skil. There are no desktop CPUs which have TDP under 65W. All Penryns need Northbridge chip as well which draws another 10W, I think. That gives the total of 75W, 21W hotter than current (44W+10W). iMac would need huge overhaul to survive that heat.

I never purported to know anything about the future of the iMac. That's why I use words like "not outside the realm of possibility."

None of here knows for sure anything about a new iMac. However, we're basing our respective opinions on certain signs with respect to the CPU's which are currently available and will be in the near future, historical data, and rumors posted on the front page of this and other reliable websites. This is called speculation, which is defined as "forming a theory or conjecture about a subject without firm evidence." Perhaps you don't feel comfortable speculating about a potential new iMac. If so, maybe this particular thread isn't the most appropriate one for your consideration.

If you follow their update cycle, we could be in for an update in the oct/nov range. I think the September iPod event is too early, but I strongly believe that Apple will do a refresh before the Christmas season.

If they wait for the new Intel chips (which aren't coming until early 2010) It could be nearly a year before they update the iMac.

2007 and 2008 there was only one update per year. Last update took 11 months and the one before that took 10 months. I'm happier if they update iMac once a year but do a good update, not just DDR3 and renamed GPUs. We need something more significant and if that's not available before 2010, then we wait.

Well here is my 2 pennies worth.

Although I am new to the world of Mac computers I think that there are a lot of things pointing to the release of an updated imac range. It will probably only be a minor bump/price drop similar to what they did with the Macbook range.

This site and various others that have in the past proved pretty reliable all point in that direction.

The real truth of the matter is this; Only Apple know for sure and they aren't talking, yet.

Having heated debates and bitc...ng to each other about who is right is in my humble opinion, Pointless.

have fun all but don't get to stressed about it. :):)

The Arrandale chips that everyone refers to as not out until next year, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that mean that they wouldn't make it into new iMacs for at least another year and half?

I'd speculate that Apple need to do another update in the next 2-3 months in order to put enough space between the new (sept) range and thier Spring Arrandale release, without allowing the current model iMac to go stale.

also the bombardment of new features seems unlike apple, a iMac from this year moving into next year and gaining Arrandale, Bluray and DDR3 seems a bit of a leap and a giant finger at last years model...
