where apple really messed up with the intel switch

The biggest hurdle for me switching to a mac is getting all the web plugins to work on the web. The web (safari and firefox) are the Mac's biggest applications, face it, we spend the most time on the web...

Flip 4 mac is very unstable, many sites don't work with it, even with the universal application. As a software company they try very hard, but it seems like it is a very small company...

Apple should make sure Itunes or their own new media player should play all the web plug ins...

The average switcher doesn't know how to do work arounds to get the plug ins to work, and honestly they shouldn't have to.
 
I wish that VLC would make a website plugin! this way we could watch everything in the web browser and we wouldn't have any problems! apart from some WMV formats!
 
I have learned, but if they want the average switcher, they should have everything working as perfect as possible. Having flip 4 mac as their media player support is poor, real poor.
 
I am a little surprised to hear someone say this... honest.

Flip4Mac works very well for me. The only WMV content that I have trouble viewing is content compressed with an MS-only codec.... and I find those pretty rare.

What are you having trouble with, in particular. Maybe we can help.
 
all radiomat.com web sites... my work around is to use the old windows media player 9... radiomat.com web sites are all the major U.S. talk stations, especially on the east coast...

try 610wip.com with an intel mac.

Wasn't this just as much an issue before the Intel transition?

More of an issue the further back you go, actually... I don't quite know what this has to do with the Intel transition. It seems to be more of a gripe with M$'s piss poor implementation of WMP on Mac.

odd... I click on the 'Listen Now' flash banner and I get a 404/not found error... That's not Safari's fault.... any other?

agreed. even Windows doesn't come with all the plug ins there.
its the problem of having so many different formats.
you download the ones you need when you need them.
and WMV/WMA player are MS's fault, not Apple's.
 
OK, microsoft has dropped the ball for the Macs... but Apple needs to fix the situation and develop a media player that plays all formats... Period... Spreading blame to developers doesn't help Apple... Flip 4 Mac is a great company and very friendly, but apple shouldn't have to count on them for such a big application...

I'm listening to 610wip... using rosetta under safari and the old media player... try this under the new flip and not using rosetta...

but if MS wont allow their codecs to run on the players they provide for OS X what is apple supposed to do? they are proprietary formats. they own the rights to them. it is MS's fault and not apple's.

Apple gives you Quick Time, it doesn't have all the plug-ins no. but neither does Windows out of the box either.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of some of their past 'deal's has been that Apple *won't* make plugins to play WMVs..... but that is purely speculation

ok, i didn't realize the codec thing, but why are they letting flip 4 mac make it work with quicktime? Why not just have apple make it work with quicktime??? Obviously microsoft and apple want it to work out, or microsoft would have cut the cord completely.

Apple wants nothing to do with it to be honest as far as i can tell. Flip4Mac is MS being lazy and saying here, instead of us continuing to develop WMP for Mac use this instead. and its integrated into QT. which means its a QT plug-in really.

Why wouldn't apple want anything to do with it... The web is the major applicatioon for 90% of the intel mac users (mac mini and imac aren't really serious professional type computers)

its not their codec, its not thier application. they want WM to fail to be honest with you. they develop MPEG and QuickTime the couterpoint to Windows Media if you will. if it works on their computers fine because it needs to, but by no means will Apple go out of their way to have it succeed more than it has to. playback is fine too. MS are the same way. this is why WMA files aren't really all the reliable to play on Macs... they don't want them too. for example, look at iTunes for Windows, only that version can play and convert .wma files because Apple wants people using their format, not .wma.

this is why it is left up to MS and third party support. if it doesn't work, its not Apple's fault, its not their system. its Microsoft's system.
 
Most of the web requires you to use microsoft's media player though...

The windows media player isn't dying anytime soon, actually it has passed Quicktime in my opinion... I love my mac, so don't think I'm a PC guy... The ms media player is already being used in entertainment centers, Quicktime hasn't evolved much at all... MS's media player is a very stong application.

My point is that I think that this is a web-programming issue on the server side.... it appears that my browser is being shunted to another (undeveloped) part of their site because of how it is interpreting my browser settings.

I am inclined to believe that if I got a 'good' link that I could listen to the content. So far, I don't see a problem with Safari or Flip or Apple in this respect.

Can you send me the link that YOU get when you listen to the show? Maybe you get a different link because you are running Safari in Rosetta.

I dunno, I am just trying to get to the bottom of the problem.
 
It works fine with the windows media player under rosetta...

It sure would be nice for a better solution than rosetta, or just to get over not using a certain site...

I have to agree with you on WM surpassing QT. The only reason QT isn't great is because it handicaps itself... I dont wnat to open iTunes to hear a quick song. I like how WM opens quick and doesn't take to long for loading like iTunes does (but that only counts in my part since i'm running a p3 800mhz and 128 ram). I'm just saying...
