I'd guess most of the current production is being stockpiled for the international release. After that the supply should stabilize a bit.

I guess here is where the Apple conspiracy could come in handy: "Apple doesn't want you to have one so that you will buy more...ah...that's right."

All of them, or just the 16 gig? Makes sense to me, as I'm sure that the 16 gig has the lowest profit margin (as in Apple isn't paying exactly 100 bucks for those extra 16 gigs).

Because Apple generating more PR with an artificially constrained supply is more important than building an installed base and actually selling product.

The fact is that it's a hot selling product. I'm sure they are making them as fast as they can within the parameters of an efficient production cycle. It would be a costly mistake to have 5 million of them sitting at retailers waiting to be sold.

I'm curious how long people are waiting after being told 3 days.

I feel kind of like a fool for waiting. I wish I had known it was going to be weeks.

Aye, I feel like a bit of a fool as well.

I was in a store day after launch (so Sat. May 1st) around midday. I had already checked online and saw wait times were listed as 5-7 days. So I was torn between getting my name on the store waiting list, or else just ordering online. The employee at the store helping me told me that "almost certainly" it would be 2-3 days tops.

That was 10 days ago and counting. If I had simply gone home and placed my order online, I likely would be posting this response from my iPad. Instead of still waiting for some mysterious e-mail message to appear...

Doubtful.

Really? Here is what Steve Jobs said in Mid-April when asked if Apple was purposely delaying shipment to Europe:

"Are you nuts? We are doing the best we can. We need enough units to have a responsible and great launch."

I think that pretty much goes to the fact Apple is stockpiling them for the Euro launch.

I was in line during the launch of the 3G and they ran out of 16GB's a few minutes after opening the doors. An employee came down the line and took names and email addresses of those that wanted a 16GB. 11 days now and still no email. This sucks.

When I got on the waiting list...

...you had to log in with an "AppleID". If they just got your emailID, I don't see how they could have added you to a wait list - did you get a confirmation email that you were added to the wait list? The subject line would be "We'll be in touch soon about your iPad."

You got it. They're getting their cake and eating it too... launch international AND keep the US word-of-mouth drumbeat going as iPads trickle out to consumers.

I put myself on the 16G 3G wait list last Tuesday at the Bethesda Row store and I have not heard from apple yet.

Have you recieved an email confirming you are on the waiting list? I know sounds dumb but I called last monday and was told I was put on the list and now a week later, I called back only to find I actually wasnt and now i actually am on the list (Recieved confirmation email) and have to wait problably 2 weeks.. because some "Genius" Cant do his F*$@ING JOB. Im extremely pissed... so might want to double check.

I finally pulled the trigger and decided I wanted an iPad today. So after work I hit up two Best Buys that had zero iPads of any model; onto a reseller that had 32gb 3Gs but I was after a simple 16gb wifi. Found what I wanted at Tek Serve on 23rd Street on my walk home (I love NYC). So don't lose hope. They're out there. I'm writing this on mine right now and I'm very impressed.

I saw a black helicopter fly off with a stack of ipad boxes. It had UN symbols all over it. Not sure what it all means.

16gb were purposely under-produced.

Or simply, they just suck. 16 GB is not enough for anything, iPhone OS is weak to do serious tasks, the glossy screen is awful outdoors, the internet is not full without Flash, accessories are ridiculously overpriced and make the iPad look stupid; and most importantly, by the time you get everything, you paid out as much as you would for a MacBook.

Tablets should be cheap and open to all sorts of technologies. So many people hate iTunes and all the Apple limitations that I still suspect that this market segment will be flooded with reasonably priced tablets in a year or so.

I always had issues with the iPad, but until last week, I was planning to buy one to really see it in action. Then I saw the UK price, which was even higher than I originally anticipated. Money is not an issue, but charging THAT much for THIS is kind of taking the pi$$ on Apple's part.

If companies can produce netbooks with more expensive processors, with keyboard, with full desktop OS for a couple of hundred, it's not gonna take long to come up with a budget touchscreen e-reader that can browse the web and is ideal for light tasks.

I'm sure that many of us at one point was hoping to get the second generation iPad, but when will that happen? Personally, I don't think it will be that much better. Most issues will not go away, like the exclusion of Flash and the dependency on iTunes.

Yawn! Cry me a river...

Just to try and put a little perspective on this, Apple is currently on course to sell more iPads in the 3 months since it launched than it does desktop and laptop machines combined. It's not surprising that stocks are a wee bit hard to find, especially considering there's an international launch to prepare for as well.

Oh, and 16Gb is plenty for a lot of iPad users as unlike an iPod you're not necessarily taking your entire music and video library on the road with you. For the main use-case where the iPad spends the bulk of its life in the home (like the majority of laptops do oddly enough...) streaming media is the way to go.

Haha....um, no. I just trusted the employee when he said I would be notified when they got some more in. How silly of me. FML.

It has been 1 week since I was placed on the wait list and still no positive notification from Apple. I did get the confirmation that I was ON the list so at least my itunes account info worked. The employee at the time told me it would be 5 days....
