Is the stock you see when ordering online for pickup the same as what's available if you walk in off the street? As in, even though it's not listed for pickup, would they have stock in store anyway?

The online order to pick up in-store is the total stock for that store. At least that is what my friend that works at the apple store told me.

So if you are able to order online and pick up in store, its the same as walking in and getting it without ordering online first.

Apple Southampton has a 13"MBP M1 16GB /1TB available for pickup tomorrow.
Good shout. If only I lived closer - adding a 45 quid train ticket and 3 hour round trip isn't ideal. Here's hoping they might pop up in London soon.

80% of the people these entry level Macs are targeted at would not see any significant difference with a 8GB M1. Apple's new M1 architecture is more memory efficient as the Apple Silicon Design is optimised for MacOS code. So for the same RAM capacity as Intel the M1 can handle more.
That's not how memory works. You could say the os uses up less, or swapping out is faster because of the ssd. But data is data, regardless of the chip you use.

Yes, data is data. A single copy takes up the same amount of space regardless of architecture.

That said, if you can avoid duplicating the data across multiple segregated memory pools, you end up using less total memory because you're working with one copy of the data instead of multiple copies.

See https://www.howtogeek.com/701804/how-unified-memory-speeds-up-apples-m1-arm-macs/

I never mentioned data. I suggest you read John Gruber’s article, he knows what he is talking about.

‘But I think it’s also the case that for most tasks for most people, these M1 Macs need less RAM to perform equivalently to, if not better than, their Intel-based counterparts. This sounds like ******** but it’s not. It’s the result of a hardware system architecture whose design aligns with Apple’s software architecture.’

I told ya - here is MBP 16GB/1TB available on Dec 4th for pickup at one of my nearby stores. This usually depends how soon your order is ready - if it’s ready tomorrow (most probably it will be), then you can go pick it up!

Would love to know when Apple Stores refresh their stock. I seem to recall an article a while ago say it's every 5 days.

I’m guessing that means they know when stock is incoming ahead of time?
Maybe, but not necessarily. Perhaps there were no more unbooked Thursday pickup appointment time slots?

When I saw one become available it similarly was for next day pickup - I had to choose a time slot during the order process and the spots began as early as store opening - so I suspect they had it in hand despite showing next day. Plus, I got an its-ready email late that day -- probably could've gone and gotten it then if I weren't already busy.

I’ve been checking about twice a day (early morning and some other time) and I haven’t been able to pin down a pattern. The 16 GB/1TB/space grey models seem to pop up sporadically here and there in the Philadelphia area stores. That’s the only 16 GB config I’ve been able to find. Also, it doesn’t show up if you click the lowest base model M1 and upgrade the specs, weirdly. I’ve always had to click the higher range model.

Same as I saw here -- watching availability for the nearest 12 stores (GA/AL/TN/SC) several times a day I'd see availability pop up at random times. No pattern I could discern. ... and when it showed as available at a store, it seemed it became unavailable pretty quickly. I'd suggest checking more often than twice a day - I had my desired config in my cart in Safari on my phone so I could easily do a refresh / check other stores periodically.

16gb/1TB is a BTO. It will be available in all stores.
Having worked at a bunch of Apple Authorized Resellers in the past, I can assure you that B/CTO models were not universally at every store. Apple stores, maybe. Wouldn't put it past them. But your mileage will absolutely vary with third party retailers.

Having been in contact with the UK small business team today, and according to them it seems the 16gb/1tb models aren't stocked in stores at all - at least in the UK. I'm not sure if that rings true as it appears some have been floating around. The mystery of the Apple Store stock continues...

They've been available on a few stores around the country this week. Unfortunately...1TB is overkill for me se I'm just going to order a 16/512 for delivery in January. :)

For the life of me I can't see any popping up. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong store selection on the website...

I guess I am really confused why the 16GB, at only $200 difference, is not the default option? Especially when it is still well-below the cost of the i5 models and the memory plays so much more of a role in these laptops.

$200 is a ripoff.

16GB should be the base configuration. 16GB $699 Mac Mini, but people buying such a machine could get ten years of use out of it and that wouldn't be good for Apple's optimized profits.

It shows the 12 closest stores. IIRC they had them in the Liverpool, and the Trafford Centre stores a couple of days ago. Just checked and there's none available now.
