they get shipped to the store, getting it shipped to you is a second time it gets shipped so theres a higher risk for it to get damaged as it gets shipped twice.

listen, it will probably be all the same but all i said is that for myself, i dont want to take any chances with this 27 inch imac

No. If it gets shipped to you, it never gets shipped to the store so it ships the same number of times.

Components intended for handheld devices have to pass drop tests. Wouldn't Apple also do or demand drop testing on their packaging? They must be aware of the potential treatment the packaged computers are likely to get.

huh? lol, Lets take amazon for example, amazon received a shipment from the apple wearhouse first, THEN it gets shipped to you once again so thats 2 trips.

One question to u guys. do u think the new iMac will be sold out or the iMacs are not like the ipads and ipods and iphones?

Im guessing the iMacs dont sell out like the iTouch devices ..

There isnt a cats chance in hell apple will sell more imacs than iPads.

So there always going to be in stock, demand will be initially a little higher than usual but i wouldn't expect it to take more than a week to get to you if your order online.
But naturally they will be in the retail stores the day of release.

On a side note and me whining a little. Im fed up of apple neglecting the Mac's on the whole its annoying that the Iphone and Ipad etc are getting these constant refreshes and all this press coverage while the mac users who form the real back bone of the apple community get neglected so much. =]

I'll be giving Steve cash when he delivers it to me in person, since after reading this thread - I too am leery of delivery trucks. :p

You can never tell -- it depends on how radically they are changed. It took over a month to get my i7 when they were first announced.

Hmm true but things have changed since the first I7's came out and many people will miss this refresh because they purchased the current models.
(source: my idle speculation  )

I doubt demand will outweigh supply but you never know!

You said you were going to get it at the Apple store in NYC, now you want to use Amazon as an example. FAIL.

And in case you haven't realized it yet, your fear of having a product shipped is absurd.

im not lol, and okay forget amazon, lets talk about apple. the product gets shipped to apple's wearhouse here in the US from China, so thats one trip and then it gets shipped to u.

Like i said i love buying online , all i said is that ill buy the imac in the store this time lol. ;)

As a former UPS worker, I worked there during holiday season when I was like 17 or so, they don't give a **** about your package. Its true, I used to call us "Ooops" U-P-S because there was a lot of dropping of packages, though I recall a story about a imac that got shipped to a house one of the drivers told me, he was also a machead. So he had respect for boxes shipped from Apple, he was always carefull with those, he got to the guys house and the guy ran outside all happy, handed him the box, the guy only had to make it 10 yards to his front door, tripped, fell on the box and they both heard a glass shattering like sound, he said he jumped in his van and GTFO.

But since we don't have a Apple Store in Alaska....(till SEPTEMBER! Wooo)

We have the MacHaus, a reseller that is pretty cool, bought all my Apple gear from and never sold me anything defective or broke. Good on ya MacHaus! :D

I've always ordered my Macs online. Is the average Apple Store able to make the upgrades that are available online?

If so, I'll likely buy in person. (If any summer back-to-school incentives being offered online are available in stores, as well, that is.)

BTW, for the person who s/he'll be buying from the Education Store, Apple Stores offer the education discount. Or so I was told a month or two ago when a saleswoman tried to talk me into not waiting for the new iMacs.

That story has the same effect on me as seeing someone get kicked in the nuts. Damn.

I live in Leeds (UK) theirs no apple store here so i'm driving all the way to Manchester to pick one up. (i don't trust shipping companies) :)

You can go to KRCS in Leeds, it's at the bottom of the merrion centre - they're an official Apple reseller - we've bought a few from them for work without issue

Ya know, I've never bought anything from Apple directly near the product release. I think that I might venture to the Apple Store if the finances line up around the release time for the new iMac. On my old one, the ports are starting to go :(

For all you "I dont trust shippers" Macginger got this right.

How the hell do you think the iMacs get to the stupid store? In the back of a delivery truck, duh. Worst logic ever.

Mine is coming from whoever has it cheapest.

They're delivered on pallets, and shrink wrapped to hell to decrease movement - how long do you think it would take to hand load everything to a super store??

Exactly, they are super shrink wrapped so the boxes cant move at all. thats the difference, when UPS delivers the box is moving all over in their truck..

You have a UPS worker right in this thread telling u the truth so there ya go :D

I mean its really no secret, everyone knows shipping companies dont give a damn about your package but theres nothing you can do about it.

There are some good companies like companies that deliver tvs, they make an appointment, test the equipment, hook it up and so on.. but the usual ups, fedex and usps are just blah :p

John Lewis, 12% employee discount. "Supermarket" online shopping depts work very differently from warehouse shipping (I'm a co-ordinator on one), and you're far less likely to have any problems because with a product as large and heavy as a 27" (I'm really hoping they go bigger, I want to wall mount it as a replacement to a TV =P) because they usually devote an entire side of the delivery van to it, at which point it's strapped down extremely tightly.

Hi folks, first time poster, and a recent Mac-convert (thanks to my newly acquired MBP). Anyway, been scouring the forums and looking forward to iMac news. This may be the death of Windows for me, but I digress.

Just curious, for those who want higher configurations of their iMacs, why must you order? They don't sell the higher/optional configurations in their retail stores?

Anything Apple is still very new to me. Would appreciate clarification, as that seems odd to me they wouldn't carry all options in the store.

The stores get the BASE models if you will. iMacs usually come in four base models, two lower end, two higher end.

So two have 21.5 inch screens, and two have 27" inscreens.

The lower ends have i3's and higher ends have i3 - i5's.

The reason they do this is so they can push out iMacs in large quantiities. They could have for example a assembly line pushing out all 21.5 iMacs with i3 Processor with 3.06 and 4 gigs of ram, they don't have to stop and put in user requested parts. Its simple and fast, mass production of one unit.

These base models are pretty much the only models that get sent to retail stores, you CAN get a i7 for example in a iMac, but you have to configure it and it is treated differently at the factory, being fitted with something not sold in the thousands, comparatively.

Its like how you go to any pc manufacture website, and theres a rush model that can be sent out in 24 hours, they mass produce that model, thats why its usually cheaper and faster to ship. No person has to handle and change things.
