A small request for a future feature: I often go to the video store and while browsing the racks I often wish I could easily pull up a movie title and it's metacritic or RT rating quickly and easily. Is it at all possible to add the ability to "lookup" a movie and if it's in RT or metacritic to pull it up? I sometimes just go to their site on my iphone but it gets clunky and would really love to be able to do that on your app.

Already asked, and answered (at least, as it relates to RT) a few posts up:

Sorry... can't do. The licensing terms of RT restrict this. You're only licensed to use what's in the syndicated feed.

:(

Not sure about Metacritic though.

I, for one, would like that feature too. With RT. Unfortunately IGN/Fox doesn't want us to have it. Other tools that met the same fate:
Tomatometer Web App (and OS X Widget)
Tomatoes, a native iPhone app

:(

Congrats on getting the app back! Just downloaded and installed it now and am already loving it, and really appreciate being able to pick metacritic over RT. For some reason I just prefer them.

Unfortunately... no. That usage violates the licensing terms. I dislike that that's the case (esp since you can just view it in your web browser). However... that's life.

I believe it's from him. Why? Because in the past I have emailed Steve and gotten equally curt, brash answers. Not always. But sometimes.

I think that's just his style; apparently it's served him well over the years.:p
It's not the attitude of the supposed e-mail, but the misspellings, the completely unprofessional nature of the format, and the fact that "Steve Jobs" gave information to a random e-mailer that apparently the developer couldn't get until earlier today. And that's assuming that the information in that e-mail was correct in the first place, which the dev can neither confirm nor deny, due to the NDA.

Anyway, that's my two cents. ;)

Just picked a random quote to reply to. Thanks for all of your hard work.

Tnx!

BTW, if you guys can post reviews on the store, i'd really appreciate that. Unfortunately my score got pulled down for things that i've fixed (or were out of my control), but the reviewers haven't gone in to revise things. Having some recent reviews to balance things out would be very appreciated!

Fortunately, the people i have talked to at apple seemed genuinely unhappy about the length of time it took. This will hopefully bode well for how they react to problems in the future (though hopefully it will be with other apps and not mine! :D )

Unfortunately, I'm 90% I already reviewed it, but I'll check to make sure.

Congrats. I really like your app. Great to see it back. I'll be sure to go add my review as soon as I get the chance.

Indeed. How so very silly. In any case, if it helps lessen the sting, here's a bookmarklet I devised that iPhoners can use... it gives you a nice popup window that will search Rotten Tomatoes for you. Saves a few steps and zooming in to find the RT search box, at least:

PHP:
javascript:(function(){%20function%20getSearchString%20(promptString)%20{%20s%20=%20null;if%20(document.selection%20&&%20document.selection.createRange)%20{%20s%20=document.selection.createRange().text;%20}%20else%20if%20(document.getSelection)%20{%20s=%20document.getSelection();%20}%20if%20(!%20(s%20&&%20s.length))%20{%20s%20=prompt(promptString,'');%20}%20return%20s;%20}%20searchString%20=%20getSearchString('Enter%20movie%20title%20to%20search%20for:');%20if%20(searchString%20!=%20null)%20{%20if(searchString.length)%20{%20location='http://www.rottentomatoes.com/search/full_search.php?search='+escape(searchString)+'';%20}%20else%20{%20location%20='http://www.rottentomatoes.com';%20}%20}%20%20})();

Now, how can we save a javascript bookmarklet as a webclip on the home screen? I tried using webclip.us (so it'd have a nice icon too) but it didn't work. Any clues?

Yes, I hear you, but what I am saying is, I have gotten similarly curt, unprofessional, brash responses from that same email address... that ended up being more or less right on the money.

Steve Jobs is a notorious micro-manager, and he's known to speak his mind, out of turn. There's nothing new or surprising about this.

We can glean from the fact that (A) Tomatometer Web App (and widget) was pulled and (B) Tomatoes.app was pulled too from the App Store, that this email "response" with the explanation isn't completely outrageous. In fact, it's probably 100% exactly why the app was pulled. It's the same reason Metasyntactic has said he can't roll in RT search. It's against RT's licensing terms.

So, someone at IGN/Fox complained, not realizing that another arm of the company already approved BoxOffice's use, as it's within the guidelines of their own licensing terms. And Apple pulled the trigger as a result without confirming anything.

What would have been nice, would be if Metasyntactic was informed precisely and right away why the app was pulled, so that he could respond with the appropriate defense. The lack of communication from Apple to the developer bothers me more than anything.

I'm just saying, I don't think markiscool just "made up" that email for kicks... I believe he really did get that back from sjobs@apple.com.

Anyway, that's my three cents. ;)

What a surprise to launch iTunes this morning, seeing 2 apps needing updating, and one of them was BoxOffice (I still have v1.0). Great to see it back and I can't wait for the future updates.

Cheers, Metasyntactic :)

Just so you guys know, while sjobs@apple.com is very rarely answered by Steve himself, it is usually answered by high-ranking support staff (or so I've heard). Great to see the app back in the store, Cyrus!

The app store is a joke and a disaster... your rating seems pretty solid at 4 stars compared to a lot of other stuff out there.... i'm sure you'll have it back up to 4.5 stars in no time... you deserve about 10 stars... too bad that we can only put 5 ;)

Any reason why my local Rave Motion Pictures theater is not listed? I live in Montgomery, AL, and the Rave is by far the most popular theater in town (out of only 2 theaters!), but it never comes up in my list of theaters, even if I increase range to 30-40 miles (even thought I'm only a couple of miles from it). The theater has been there for several years and is listed on Fandango and Movietickets.com

Is there a site I can contact to request that they add it?

And great app, by the way!!

Yep I just realized that myself, not sure why they don't because they used to (although I could NOT buy tix thru them). Movietickets.com does list them (and sells tix): http://www.movietickets.com/house_detail.asp?house_id=7649

Speaking of which, any chance of adding a feature to allow ticket purchases thru movietickets.com, for situations like this (where a theater is on one site but not another)?

Nope. The data is licensed for exclusive use only. You can't offer both types (or offer two different apps). Sorry :(
