I wasn't expecting a new version of OS for the iPhone, but a new update would have been a great thing.

The 3.1.2 feels a bit oldie :)

If you think about it...why would anyone be expecting a new OS?

There's been no beta cycle, and I dont think Apple is stupid enough to repeat past disasters.

Of course, they did just release an iPad without a camera...so they really are not thinking about users or usage.

In fact, there are a number of really cool tablets due out this year that will make apple's release far from compelling.

I do not get the iPad and missing camera thing. Why do I want a camera on a tablet? If you mean front facing, okay maybe for future video conferencing apps. But I do not understand the whining over adding a camera to a device that would be ill-suited to picture taking. The iPad is not a swiss army mobile device and those who wanted a phone and camera may not have visualized there actual use on this form factor.

The iPad seems pretty pointless to me. It doesn't replace a computer or a phone. I already carry around my iPhone and MacBook Pro. Why a third device? The only thng I was looking forward to today and an iPhone hardware or software update, at least an announcement of things to come.

I hate to tell you, but Apple doesnt want you replacing you MacBook or your iPhone. They want people in the market for a netbook or perhaps an ereader to purchase.

3.2 was probably forked for the iPad from 3.1.x. It's doubtful 3.2 will ever show up on a iPhone or iPod Touch. Most likely Apple will announce 4.0 later this year that will merge the iPad and iPhone software back on the same code base. Since 4.0 implies lots of changes, you would expect they would have a few months of testing by devs first.

Considering the fact that the derisory iPad has ~10hours of video watching battery life and nearly 30 days of standby, is it a possibility that Apple has greatly improved the OS in terms of power usage? Will us iPhoners see such an improvement in power usage with 3.2 or 4.0?

Assuming the iPad's OS and iPhone's OS are one-offs of each other...

Or is it that the iPad simply has a much larger battery?

It's doubtful. More likely, it all has to do with the A4 processor Apple created for the iPad. My guess is much of the development time was spent getting the OS to work on that processor. You will probably see this same processor in the iPhone that is released later this year. I would expect any new devices using this processor to get a slight increase in battery life, but not old devices.

Because you are not thinking broadly. Even my 399 netbook has a front facing camera and this is what people are referring too.

But its just the whole short sited thinking on Apple's part that urks most. Do it right, be comprehensive and damn it get user's opinions as you build it.

This whole evolving thing is just about milking me for money. The iphone is a perfect example...even the 3GS has not gotten it right yet. I hate apple for taking this approach.
