What's wrong with a carrier model? We love our TMO iPhones.

Locked to T-Mobile under EIP; they have to unlock it for you upon request. It only has an Intel modem, which cannot be used on CDMA carriers. Resale value isn't as nice as the CDMA/GSM models. T-Mobile also isn't fair to long time subscribers with their new "deals" since you have to add a line and/or trade devices in.

I got a text saying I was automatically enrolled into the iPhone upgrade program from Apple. This is my first iPhone. Can I trade in a tmo iPhone to apple to get an X+?

T-Mobile IUP deals have to be done in-store. All iPhone trade ups, through IUP, has to be done with Apple. T-Mobile has a weird requirement you go physically to a store rather than do stuff online or through the Apple Telephone Sales line.

Buying, through T-Mobile, is slightly different.

Ok thanks I'll see if the X+ has band 71 or mimo. If not, I'm gonna wait

Agreed. And now that the iPhone X is available almost in every Apple store and carrier, other sellers are looking to sell them quickly for at least somewhat of a discounted price, due to the stable stock levels. Swappa would be a place to check first.

Exactly, also you go this route you're not paying sales tax on $1000 or more. Again reputable seller, sealed box. They're out there.

It is not the carrier models, it is about carrier stores. Most of them try to either upsell you a device you don't need or lie blatantly to obtain sales.
Oh ok. I'll need a new line in the fall, so I'll happily take a BOGO iPhone X+, if possible. Probably be able to sell my 8 plus for $550 or so.

Never mind, staying with the iPhone 8+. This topic can be closed. Thanks.
