Where is the update?

It has been a while now since the youtube update.. Where are the HD movies, the rentals, games, buying movies from the TV? With these features AppleTV would double in sales, come on Apple. Show some love for theTV

I'm actually really wanting an TV with 1080p support. Although I don't hold my breath for updates. Remember that for Apple, the TV is just a "hobby" of sorts.

Yea, we've seen updates to basically the entire Apple product line up now without a single thing for the TV. My guess is that they have (are?) taken a close look at the product and seeing if it is worth continuing the product line at all. Either they are going to beef up the machine's innards or drop it is my guess. Could be a problems with content providers.. who knows.
I started a thread a while ago, a wish list, for theTV. I wonder if any of those wants will ever be addressed. I guess it would be nice if they could give us at least one more update with a few "goodies" thrown in.

It's painfully simple and I hope Apple agrees. All they need to do to increase ATV sales 10-fold is add:
1) iTunes HD Content
2) iTunes rentals (HD included)
Add those 2 and you have a killer device.

As much as I love my Apple TV, this is the single most disappointing product since the G4 Cube. It has so much potential, but it clearly does not have the support from within Apple to push its development.
There is no excuse for not supporting this product with continuous software updates. After all, Apple specifically accounted for such updates on their financial reports.
How hard is it to add video or on-the-go playlists? Why aren't there ABC-owned and produced shows on the iTunes Store in HD? If you're not going to support it internally, why not open it to third-party plug-ins (the frameworks to allow this are already built-in)?
This product was released in mid-March and has received the same amount of updates as the iPhone (which launched in June).
I expect more from Apple.

a feature I had thought about which would be small and probably easy to integrate would be iPod docking. What spured this was a friend came over last night and had some videos on his iPod. I wanted to watch them on the TV and instead of just dropping it into a dock connected to the TV (using the appleTV menu structure) I had to pull out my cables and plug them in after unhooking something.
The AppleTV can be a media hub with iPod docking, optical drive connection and TiVO if just a few small updates were added. Come on apple, lets really do a number on this one. Ok?

My guess is all their content providers are not ready for it or they were never 100% behind it in the first place.

That's what I was just about to type. If you ask me, the product isn't being hampered by Apple, but by the media companies that supply the content.
It is there last century business model that is causing people to use HB and VH instead of downloading content...
I think we may see the 2nd Generation AppleTV at Macworld.

Actually, it has received more functional updates than the iPhone. All the iPhone has received is some bug fixes and another way for you to spend money.
At least we got the YouTube update.

That's hardly fair though. Whether or not you use the functions, the iPhone added the WiFi store (which I suppose you mentioned.. but again, you might not use it, but I would use the WiFi store more than I would the YouTube app), added the double-tap space for a period entry, and double click home button for ipod controls. I'm sure there are a few others as well.

It wasn't at Macworld 2007. Only after a few months on the market did Steve refer to it as a "hobby". AT MWSF when Steve announced the name change [from "Apple Computer Inc." to "Apple Inc."] it was identified as one of the four pillars (legs) of Apple (the other three being iPod, iPhone, and Mac.)
Yes, well, you missed the point (which is understandable as I do not always communicate clearly). My point, put bluntly, is this:
iPhone has had NO new software added to it except for the store, a means by which you can add to Apple's bottom line.
AppleTV has had a new, free feature called YouTube. (Did I mention is was free and that, in order to use it, it doesn't cost you money? And that's what I call a feature.)

I am wondering why people expect feature upgrades. Did they purchase the aTV expecting it to do more than it does? Thats really not a good way to go about purchasing anything IMO.
No I bought it a love it, but would love to get even more out of it. They have talked about some features but not released them yet. When they do it will be great, but right now it's great too. I have about 200 movies (80 are 720P HD) loads of TV shows, and all my music. I utilize my appleTV to the max and it's amazing. So simple, everyone in my family can use it. That is why it's a winner for me... It just works!
I don't think that's it exactly. It's just that it appears that the Apple TV is more than just a simple set top box to most. Apple has already added a feature, YouTube, and people are clamoring for more. I'm pretty happy with mine. For me I'd like to see an update that improves on what's already there. I'd like create play lists, go back to the main menu without stopping the music playback, etc.

The only thing I am still missing for appleTV is 5.1 discrete surround sound. Without this having movies on it for me is still only half useful.

As someone who is currently only mildly interested in an ATV, if these two things were announced today I would certainly have one by the end of the day.

Two words "Visual Hub" and there are sources where you can find 720P movies...
I can survive without 5.1, the sound is still very good...
If I want my top quality I'll watch some of my HD DVD's but for fast easy movies with one click the AppleTV is where its at...
