I also have HD DVD Movies and I have ripped all of my regular DVDs using Handbrake and it is great being able to browse and play them on the atv.

Have you figured out a way to rip your HD DVDs so you can watch them on the atv at 720p? I don't mind downscaling to 720p, that is the resolution of my tv anyway and it still looks great. I also don't mind losing the surround as the sound is still very good. But i desparately want to get the HD DVDs onto the atv so i can start moving away from buying DVDs.

I can buy an HD DVD drive and I know anydvd hd will unlock it, but I cannot find any software that will rip it to h.264.

any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, but how does being able to rip hd dvd's allow you stop buying dvds?

Also, if you're concerned with the "quality" of hd dvd, why would you be okay to settle with downconversion to 720p? Not only that, but if you're concerned with "quality", I'd imagine 5.1 would be a requirement before hd dvd ripping/reproduction. I know I'd rather see 5.1 first. Allow me to have surround sound and then I'll consider going to their format and hardware. Otherwise I'll just stick with my dvd players.

I couldn't agree more. Do the posters that are continually asking for HD content realise that current broadband Internet simply doesn't make this realistic? Do you guys even know how big a HD movie is???? Even if you had a connection fast enough, the total download amount for even half a dozen movies a month would be way more than most plans allow. Unfortunately, until the "personal" Internet speeds up BIG TIME optical media will continue to rule supreme.

I also think that many of the users requesting 1080P HD content may not realise that the difference between 720HD & 1080P/1080i is not that great. I've added this link regarding the various versions of HD http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t520949.html It shows that for many/most programs there isn't a difference. Keep in mind the media must be produced using the High Level HD equipment otherwise there isn't any improvement.

PS Please Apple, give us 5.1 surround on Apple TV and we'll be happy. I love my Apple TV but the loss of surround sound is a step back ten years (yes I've had surround sound for that long).

Ok -- either my Apple TV has gone bonkers or there is a new update available right now? I have the 1.1 update installed, and I just turned it on to reveal a message saying that an update is available. I'm afraid to install because I have Awkward TV installed and don't want to break that.

But is this really an update? Seems weird it would come on a Saturday night.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm an idiot. After installing Awkward TV a few days ago, I never re-updated to 1.1 with YouTube. It just finally found that update. Sorry to alarm anyone.

Anyone know if I can update to 1.1 at this point and keep my Awkward TV settings? I imagine not.

Wow. If we used your logic, things would never progress. Have you considered that if HD content (or similarly larger size media) is not made available by mainstream providers like Apple that ISPs will have no reason to improve their services?

If consumers demand better service, ISPs will eventually adjust rate plans and remove bandwidth limitations that are currently hindering the deployment of premium online content.

HD movie rentals are currently available on XBOX 360's Marketplace. Downloads run around 2-4GB compressed. For those that live in areas with decent broadband speeds, that's roughly a 2 to 3 hour download. That's perfectly acceptable. Not to mention, Apple could deploy some type of streaming service that after a certain amount of time Apple TV would allow incremental playback of the movie while it finishes.

Apple should start by offering ABC HD content on the store and gradually progress to Disney movies, etc. It's unfortunate that Apple TV development has basically come to a standstill. There's a lot of competition in this space, and unless Apple beefs up its product, Apple TV sales are going to continue to lag.

personally I think that HD TV shows would be better to start with than HD Movies. While movies would be great, it is more accepted by the general user to download a tv show than a movie. Not saying that movies wouldnt sell, but I think that they would have a better chance of success if they start with TV shows.
