Amazon in sales tax dispute

Big-box retailers are pushing states to close the online giant’s legal loophole.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT - News), Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT - News) and other large retailers are ratcheting up a political campaign to force Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN - News) to collect sales taxes, sensing opportunity in the budget crises gripping statehouses nationwide.

The big-box stores are backing a coalition called the Alliance for Main Street Fairness, which is leading efforts to change sales-tax laws in more than a dozen states including Texas and California.

Until now, the group has been largely associated with mom-and-pop stores, spotlighting stories of small toy shops and booksellers who argue Internet merchants that aren't legally required to collect sales taxes enjoy an unfair advantage with shoppers.

As a consumer hope Amazon wins this dispute. Not having to pay sales tax is one of the reasons I love shopping at Amazon. As a resident of California, I pay enough taxes already.

Amazon already collects sales tax for some states ... unfortunately they may be required to do so for our states next. I would think it would be a nightmare dealing not only with the state sales tax, but possibly local taxes as well with collection, accounting, and remitting the appropriate amounts.

Apple needs to open a shop in Jersey for VAT free goodiness. Although the island would probably sink due to sudden influx of customers.

If Amazon starts being required to charge sales tax, I imagine their business will absolutely plummet. That's one of the main reasons I buy things there!

Also, is it not nationwide that you are supposed to declare your internet purchases on your taxes so that you can pay taxes on them?

Try Delaware, Oregon, or New Hampshire.

I can't wait to move out of California in a few weeks! California taxes everything with no breaks: income tax, 9.25% sales tax, tax the full price of iPhone, bottles of water/soda CRV, and yet they're still bankrupt! California will soon be in my rear view mirror, Good Riddance!
