Installing the pre-release Apple TV Software beta requires a USB to micro-USB cable (sold separately). If you wish to install Apple TV Software beta on your device, you must first register your device UDID in the iOS Developer Program Portal..

Installation
1. Disconnect the power and HDMI cables from Apple TV. Note: If you do not disconnect the power cable before connecting the micro-USB cable, you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list.
2. Connect one end of a micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports.
3. Open iTunes on your computer.
4. Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then option-click Restore.
5. Navigate to the Apple TV Software image and click ʻContinueʼ.

Note: To return your Apple TV to the publicly released Apple TV Software version, select your Apple TV in the Source list and then click Restore. Do not disconnect your Apple TV's power cable during the restore process. Restoring to either pre-release or publicly released software through iTunes will reset your Apple TV settings, accounts, and configuration.

Ok, here it is, folks...

Upgrading the software on the Apple TV requires that the device be connected via USB without the power cord being connected. Finding the UDID, however, requires that the power cord be connected before connecting USB.

Under Windows, the UDID can be found by running the USBView utility mentioned earlier. It will be listed on the 0x0409 line for the device itself; you'll recognize it because it's 40 characters of hexadecimal. On the Mac, the UDID can be found in the System Profiler under USB. Click the Apple TV device with USB selected in the left tree. It will be the serial number listed there. Again, 40-characters of hex.

The UDID doesn't show up in either USBView or the System Profiler if you plug the Apple TV into your computer before power has been applied to the device. If the device is showing up in Restore mode in your device tree, you didn't apply power, and the UDID won't show up.

Thanks a lot! it does work. Nowhere else I could find the instruction that when searching for UDID you have to connect first to power, and it is quite confusing, because they require you not to connect the power when restoring/upgrading through iTunes.

Having the same problem.. Can't figure out the UDID for my apple tv. I've got xcode installed, but under devices it never shows up when plugged in using usb. iPhones and iPads do show up though.

For you to see your ATV in Xcode you need to have the power cord plugged in as well in the ATV.

This WORKED

YES! This worked perfectly for me, thank you DJDJ.
