Do not order it from Omni. I ordered 2gb and it work for 35 days and after 30 they don't replace bad ram. I should of never bought cheap ram. Crucial or kingston has great ram.
NEVER BUY CHEAP RAM FOR AN APPLE. ITS LIKE PUTTING IN 85 OCTANE INTO A FERRARI.

Why would you order from such a sketchy company like that to begin with? They sell "multimedia optimized" memory for $20 more than the normal memory (which isn't a good price at $49 for 1GB to begin with). That should be a clue right there that they're scam artists.

"Cheap" ram is not bad ram. And it's not at all like putting 85 octane into a ferrari. If you put 85 octane into a ferrari you'll have engine build-up and you'll get engine knock. If you put $90 Patriot RAM into your MacBookPro it's going to perform exactly the same as $150 Crucial RAM.

What you need to look for is a respectable company (Corsair, Crucial, OCZ, Patriot, Transcend, Kingston, Samsung, Mushkin) with a lifetime guarantee. Some other good quality ram includes G Skill, GeIL, and Super Talent. I'm really not familiar with the return policy for Super Talent and G Skill. I personally had a great experience RMA'ing both GeIL and Kingston RAM.

Yes, I totally agree don't go down the bargain ram route. Mac's seem overly fussy about the ram you install. I always buy Crucial to keep my Mac's happy .. :)

You are using emotive language, which, to my mind, only serves to create more FUD.

Please don't do it!

What you are claiming does not follow logically.

Apple are using Intel parts, present in an order of magnitude more PC's than Mac's.

(For the SR MBP, Apple are using Intel's 965 Express Chipset.)

Installing more RAM doesn't risk voiding the warranty or rendering 3-year AppleCare useless, right?

The new SR MBPs will take ANY DDR2 667 (PC2-5300) ram. I not sure why people think you need special "mac certified" ram in order for it to work. Crucial is way over priced, especially since you can buy any 2GB pc2 5300 ram for around $90 a piece that will perform EXACTLY the same as crucial ones have to offer. The only thing I would keep an eye out is to buy a decent brand with a lifetime warranty. The patriot ram linked before is a good brand.

Before I retired I taught in a large Higher Education College equipped with over 600 Mac's.

When I bought my first Mac just over two years ago I was advised by the college I.T. Support staff that cheap ram is problematic in Mac's.
I had no reason to doubt their word.

Sorry if this information is incorrect ..

My new 17'' MBP is on it's way and I would like to be able to upgrade the RAM from 2 to 4 GB the first day.

Which brand of RAM should I buy and what's the best place to get it - I live in The Netherlands but i can order online as long as they ship woldwide.

Cheers

You mean your 4Gb RAM as the MBP's have all slots occupied with 2 x 1Gb RAM...
