In the Depths of the SLC!
What would be really great is if I could get a version of our inventory and ordering software on this thing. Being able to walk through the store looking at what we have, having the par in the ipad, and being able to select how much we need would be awesome. Once I'm done I could just send it over our wireless connection. That would save me an hour every Sunday!

It would be a great shopping list. I have an excel shopping list I made where I have each item I can buy, it's price, where I can get it for that price, how much I should have and how much I do have. I print it out and put in what I do have and when I enter the numbers in the computer, it generates a shopping list by telling me how much I need to get. I could do this on the iPad without needing to print anything. I can edit the data right then. When I take it to the store, I can update the prices on stuff and fill out what I actually got so I can track my money better.

I can't do that on my Touch and it would be really really hard to do on my Blackberry.

I'll rant here: I have a laptop, netbook*, Palm Pre, and iPod touch*

I'm for sure going to buy the iPad on day one, I'm just that kind of guy. Where I see it fitting into my life is at the couch, at school, or anywhere really. I have reservations about taking my laptop out in public, mainly because I don't want to have to lug it around (even though it's merely a Dell XPS m1330 which is 13.3 inches.)

The Netbook I won from Engadget, so I've already craigslisted that to put money towards the iPad, which is pure profit for me, as it was given to me.

My iPod touch hasn't been touched in a long while. So I ended up selling that last night and getting 75 bucks for it, which is 25 more than I initially thought it would go for. (It was an original 8gigger with drained battery capacity, zero screen scratches, though.)

That's really what sold me on it. I loved my iPod touch, but never used it, do to my Pre having a very capable browser.

And being that all I really do on the my laptop is browse, and chat, I think the iPad will fit in nicely. When I need to do any photoshop, etc, I'll have my laptop, but as far as I can tell browsing on the iPad, compared to my netbook, will be a far more pleasant experience.

Phew, that was a long rant.

I take 5 hour bus trips once a month--something like an iPad would be wonderful to surf the web and watch movies without lugging a laptop. Sure, I can do this stuff on my iPhone now, but the small screen gets to you after awhile.

It would also be great to take on vacations and such. The fact that you aren't locked into a contract with AT&T means you can pay for the 3G only when you need it. :)

Where would you use an iPad?
I am thinking it will mainly be used in College for note taking in the lectures I have no access to a PC :)o although that is around 3 classes a week), I think it will be worth it if I have iWork on it as Microsoft Office pisses me off  so it can be used in those classes I have a PC as well although I am concerned about the not able to D/L spreadsheets/word documents to the iPad as I could well be screwed but until it is released that is why plan.

I will also use it on the Plane, Train or both when traveling and around the house and out and about generally where it would be useful to have something to amuse me for a couple of hours if where I am is boring.

classes to take notes, in my house for general hanging around with video and games, meetings for note-taking/calendar/Things(better release an iPad app), on the bus or train going home for readings.

also lots of other places once I see the full potential.

The improvements to Numbers should make keeping my gradebooks in order a fair bit easier/more tolerable.

Keynote with video out and that laser pointer feature will make giving lectures much easier at conferences, although if I could pair the iPad with an iPhone running the Keynote remote, that would be the best of both worlds. Frankly, having my MacBook sitting on the tablet at the front of the room isn't that bit of an issue, but the 10 hour battery on the tablet is too good to pass up.

At school most work is done on a linux workstation, with my MacBook acting as a web/email/iWork hub. Most of those tasks could be done better by the iPad. My only worry is that since I do a lot of typing on my laptop, that the soft keyboard would be an issue. The keyboard dock would be a solution, since I could just buy one and leave it on my desk. Bonus points for not having to lug around a charger! Extra bonus points for being small enough to fit in my portfolio's outer pocket (yes, I checked) This would let me work sans-briefcase which is just awesome, especially in the summer.

I've said it before, but if the iPad only did these few things it would still be worth $500 to me, so all the rest is just gravy.

seriously though....I create a lot of documentation and presentations. I also update and maintain my company's website, so I'm hoping for a Dreamweaver app that will allow me to do that as well.

I will pretty much use it any and everywhere. I just don't want to lug my expensive MBP everywhere I go.

I'll use it at home to surf, read e-mail, read books, read magazines, and play games.
I'll use it while flying or on the train to read books and magazines and watch movies. (And in hotels I'll use it for everything I would use it for at home.)
And if I can get certain compilations of statutes and regulations in e-book form, I'll use it at work.

Mostly on the couch when i want to browse the internet while I am watching TV.

Other than that, maybe the bathroom.

Can't really see me taking it out of the house, unless I want to show a client a video presentation on it at a business meeting.

I don't really need one.

I'm seriously considering using it at work. It seems to be a great fit for the work environment. There are numerous situations where lugging my laptop around from room to room or building to building is inconvenient. And yet I need to have my data easily accessible and available for a quick edit or e-mail.

The iPad definitely seems to be a device that can fulfill this task, and I'm especially intrigued by the practical utility of Keynote and Numbers on the iPad in mobile settings. The ability to edit presentations on the go without carrying a laptop will be greatly appreciated if it works as demonstrated.

The problem with the laptop accomplishing this type of function is that while mobile it's too unwieldy, isn't instant on, and requires a desktop or for the user to be sitting in order to be useful for data entry.

While smartphones have their benefits as well, this type of function, which is really invaluable to me, just isn't the forte of any smartphone I've used, including the iPhone. I try to use my smartphone as a computer as much as possible and it's almost there, but the main detriment turns out to be display size and the limitations of application interfaces on tiny screens. Opening even one of my smaller spreadsheets on either a Windows Mobile device or iPhone is more trouble than it's worth.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't replace my laptop or desktop with an iPad. But the truth is that I don't need a laptops power for the majority of mobile tasks that I'm likely to perform.

Everywhere....

I will always have it in my backpack as I believe it's more rugged compared to my macbook. The IPS screen is a killer feature for when I'm out photographing. And of course.... on the couch.

Personally I would take this device with me to a lot more places as my MacBook because....
a). It's cheaper
b). Better battery life.
c). Killer screen.
d). 700g vs 2270g
e). More rugged.
f). Smaller

Combine this with the 3GS that always sits in my pocket....
Killer Combo.

(One condition: I will only buy one if I can type just as fast on the iPad as on a regular keyboard)

Great for Aviation/Photographer

Well I will one use it and gladdly buy it at launch. I have iphone and Macbookpro but this will be a fantastic device for my use. As stated by a previous post, great for showing images and slideshows to Wedding clients. Yea I could use my macbookpro but this just looks so much more fun. Also alot lighter to carry. I am also a Pilot/Flight instructor. So this will alow me to use a few of my favorite iphone apps for logbook and weather and charts. Cant wait. For all the people that are complaining its simple don't buy it. What did you want and expect especially at this price.

Id buy this over any netbook.

Can't wait for Foreflight and Logten mobile to revamp the iphone app for this.
While Im waiting for Students or clients I can also do a little reading or surfing as well. Thanks Apple!

Where? Nowhere. I can still read the screen on my Touch and it's lighter and far more portable.

I already have a desktop iMac and a MacBook (but no iPhone as I already have a good phone - and because I have so few friends I never receive calls or texts).

As a university lecturer it will be perfect for reading research papers from online journals - taking notes in meetings - accessing student records in board of examiner meetings - reading the paper in coffee breaks - and assuming the iWork app reads and writes M$ Word docs I can read student's draft chapters and send back feedback without having to be near a wall socket for my laptop - and as a data entry system for laboratory and fieldwork....etc

I can also see it as being fantastic for hospitals - doctors accessing/updating patient notes without the current inefficiency of making pen & paper notes that must be copied up on a PC later.

I'm definitely getting one !

I don't know why so many people are getting irate about the iPad, i'm well excited about it. It definitely fills a gap in the Market. I made video yesterday with my thoughts about it and how I would use it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa1gDW-Bxic

I suppose people are irate because they believe Apple is at fault for whatever unreasonable and outlandish expectations they had. They also believe that since these unreasonable and outlandish expectations haven't been met that they are somehow being ripped off.

This will all die down in a few months after most of these people, against their better judgment, buy one.

An eerie but pleasant if all too brief silence will follow.
