I'm late to the thread, but if it were a base model M1 Pro versus a base model M2 Pro (as the poll suggests), then I'd select the base M2 Pro, even if the SSD is a bit slower (it's still fast as SSDs go).

However, if instead you get the fully upgraded M1 Pro (10-core CPU/16-core GPU), plus some extra RAM, plus maybe some extra SSD, for the same price as the base M2 Pro, then there's no contest that the loaded out M1 Pro would be a better deal.

Also late chiming in. These are "fun" forum debates but there is no right or wrong choice here. The decision is about personal choices and trade-offs. The correct answer will depend on each unique personal situation and intended use.

Accordingly, what would be right for me could be wrong for you - which doesn't mean that either of us is incorrect(!).

I would go for the M2. The price differential isn't that much for me and, well, newer is better. If the money was a factor, then I'd chose the M1, because, well, money is money. The truth of it in my case is that the M1Pro that I have is still an absolute champ and faster than the computing needs of most people.

Regardless of whether the OP goes with an M1 Pro or M2 Pro based system, they are going to have a machine that will last for quite a while. As long as you pick a RAM configuration that meets your current and anticipated needs, you should be able to run either variant of the Mx Pro for years to come.
