I use AP Mobile. They always send out reliable push notifications really soon after a breaking news story surfaces.

I use CNN as well but it isn't perfect. I used AP before but it was frustrating that when I click a notification, it takes me to the app but I can never find the breaking news article, only the alert. CNN doesn't take me directly to the article either, but at least I can find it on top or 1 or 2 articles down in the list.

If anyone knows of a news app that sends breaking news alerts and takes you straight to the article, please let me know.

I think the best way for me is push notifications in Twitter. For news I use NYTimes.
They update instantly; I get a notification on the screen, slide to open, then click on the link if the continuation of the head title is interesting me. Simple as that

I use NY Times, but that's only because I have a digital subscription with them. They push breaking news alerts to my phone pretty quickly.

I stopped using CNN for breaking news alerts when they were using them to promote their own programs (mainly the endless GOP debates) and the latest episodes of the Lindsay Lohan trainwreck. Maybe they've gotten better.

But I've used BREAKING NEWS since then without any problems or questionable "alerts."

I tried CNN for breaking news, but I quickly removed it when they spammed me with news that was anything else than breaking.

I tested all 3 apps today

CNN
New York Times
USA today

New York Times was faster and gives more news in push

I didn't get anything from CNN today

I use all three mentioned above - Flipboard, Breaking News, and Pulse. I also use News 360 - guess I'm a bit of a news junkie. Twitter may be fast, but too often it's wrong. And Fox News is waayyy to the left for me. :D

And then there's Reddit...
