I use Time Machine with my old man Time Capsule. Yep, still working after a HD transplant. I also use Syncovery which is pretty good too.

I am still using my Time Capsule with CCC - a kind of back up of back ups - it just does it thing 2 times a week - a separate media back up - mostly pictures, music and some movies - great for the movies since apple TV can play the movies with VLC

I've got a circa-2010 era Mac mini running my music collection and I leave it always-on. So I hung an SSD off it and use it as a Time Machine target. My desktop is backed up all the time; my laptops when I remember to.

My data is mostly on a RAID 5 NAS, currently via AFP share. Would be nice if Apple finally gave us an iSCSI initiator like every other OS has.

I do irregular Superduper! mirrors as well for my desktop, usually before updates.

Time Machine did a good job,as well as Carbon Copy Cloner.
But I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner.
