Read the OP's question..."golden"mackid

Hi everyone.
I'm very new to the iPod thing and have no idea about any of this. My husband is getting an iPod for Christmas from my mother in law and I'd like to buy him a SoundDock, but I don't know which one to get. Which one is better - the regular Series II or the portable? Is there any real difference between the two besides the price?

Thanks for your help!

She asked what Bose Sounddock should she get. She didn't ask if she should get a 2.1 system, or any other sounddock. I, along with the OP decided on the BOSE sounddock because we like the sound and the styling of the unit. She did not ask for you to give her advice on how to spend or save her money. I bought the SoundDock 10 because I fell in love with the amazing sound from such a small compact unit. I have a 16 foot ceiling in my front room and the acoustic coming off of this unit is to die for. I wanted something small and elegant. Obviously she knows that Bose cost a little more than other options, and that is her choice. Please stick to the topic of the thread instead of going off on your little tangents. If I want to spend $600 on an IPOD dock, I can do that. If I feel like it was worth it, then it was. Now you scared the poor girl away. She hasn't even posted back because of all of the hostility.
If you don't have any knowledge about the difference in Bose Soundocks, please do not post.
To the OP: How big of an area are you going to place the SD in? If it's a small room or apartment, I would go with the SD II. It has amazing sound for such a small footprint. If you have bigger room with large ceilings, I would go with the SD 10. The sound in my opinion is totally worth the extra money. This is something that you will have for years to come, might as well and get the unit you really want/ can afford.

I posted well after Christmas and don't speak for others.

What does this have to do with Christmas? She said her husband is getting an ipod for christmas. She wants to get him a BOSE SOUNDDOCK, and wants to know which one to get. Why is this so difficult for you? Leave it alone. If you can't answer the OPs question.... then don't post.

No, she didn't. But she did ask for advice on a public forum; different opinions come up. If other posters feel that they would like to try and save the OP some money by offering an alternative there is nothing barring them from doing so. What may be "obvious" to you is not always obvious to others; that's why the OP is here, to ask a question. If you feel the impulse to spend 1 million dollars on a platinum plated bose sounddock and you're happy with it, then your purchase must have been worthwhile. However, you may have been able to get the same satisfaction while spending less.

Back to the question at hand...

This is something that you will have for years to come, might as well and get the unit you really want/ can afford.

I agree. Especially with audio equipment, which will last for a while.

As a general rule, if you have the space, go for the bigger less portable option, as they usually sound better (don't listen to the marketing, this is almost always true - compromises must be made to make things portable).

B & W Zeppelin

I have been turned off on Bose now for a while. Back in the day I had the cube speakers and they ruled! I bought 2 321 systems and they were just OK...when they played a DVD. I do like the idea of a battery sounddock. But after much research between all systems I came down to 2. One was the Fatman Red-i or Roth Audio Mothership and the B & W Zeppelin. I chose the B & W because CNET did a piece on it.

Now I have the bigger one which is $599...worth every penny! To get the best cound you need it up against a wall so the bass can kick back. It makes a 128k MP3 sound great! And when you put a lossless file thru people think you are running a huge home system!

They came out with a smaller one for $399...does a few other things. But if you don't need it on the go then go B&W!
