Which do you prefer? TomTom v1.2 or Navigon v1.3?

Is there really anyone other than JB thieves who have downloaded and paid for both?

I pay for all my apps and never JB my iPhone.
I have both but i prefer Navigon.
I paid the $190 for the pair ($70 for Navigon + $20 for it's sub-par traffic add on plus the $100 for TomTom the other day).
I haven't tried Tom Tom but Navigon is very very very slow on my 3G. Everything from start-up time to re-routing to latency on how long it takes for the program to respond to touch commands is very laggy.
It also stopped remembering recent and newly entered favorite destinations.
It's a shame that I can't get a refund since i've had it for so long now.

i jb'd and downloaded both. then bought navigon. No reason why I should have to pay for both without even getting to try it. Not everyone is thieves. Get off your high horse.
TomTom because I can actually read the text on the screen. Navigon fails in this. The text is entirely too small.
So far, I think both are pretty good. The pros compared to each are:
TomTom v1.2
- Easier to read the street names on the map while driving.
- Much better POI database.
- Starts up faster (on my 3GS about 7 seconds vs 13 sec for Navigon).
- IQ Routes are very good and predict pretty accurate time.
- Faster interface moving through menus and typing in POIs
Navigon v1.3
- 3D map moves smoother while driving.
- Offers live traffic info (though, I've only seen it show interstates so far in the Chicago area).
- Automatic night colors at night (not manual like in TomTom)
- Costs less
- Announces TTS street names sooner than on TomTom (Navigon will say the street name at about 1/2 mile as well as when its time to turn. TomTom just says to turn tight in about 400 yards and then the street name only right when you need to turn. What if there are two streets a block apart? I don't have a great perception of "yards" while driving).
On both programs, I have seen some roads that are not up to date. Even roads that have been there for a year or year and a half. Probably more of and issue with TeleAtlas and Navteq rather than TomTom and Navigon (respectively). I really hope map updates are supported for free going forward, especially when each has some incorrect roads as of today.
I'll add more when I come across/think of them.

Why would One care about yards while driving?
TomTom does have a better user interface, but ...

That just gets to me, and therefore Navigon trumps
because Navigon says, "In a half/quarter mile turn right -or- in X number of feet turn right"
Yards just makes no sense while driving.

I have a 3GS and have used both.
I find Navigon to be strictly better. It has a better looking Map display and a better sounding Text-To-Speech voice (both admittedly a preference thing but I dont see how you could disagree). Navigon also has a much better database of speed limits (I have yet to find a street where Navigon didnt tell me the speed limit - for TomTom its much more a rarity).
TomTom on the other hand gives me better routes - please note they both do very well - but living in the area and using it around here TomTom generally does better (it takes me on easier routes rather than navigon which goes all which ways).

This is a feature that I really like. I travel a lot of roads (sometimes at night) that I'm not familiar with the speed limits, and Navigon has been spot on for me.
I think speed limit signs are purposely disappearing in many parts I travel, as they seem few and far between lately (even in suburb areas). Almost like it's a planned way to save money, but make money at the same time.....but I digress

I've really never understood this argument. When does this actually bother you? Are you just driving around with Show Map on and not actually following directions trying to read street names?
Since if you're following directions you have voice guidance and the names of the upcoming turns on the bottom of the display, when would this actually matter?
I agree that the street names are hard to read because of the color and size of the font, but it has never once come up while I was actually using Navigon while driving.
I use it for my job. Biggest problem is not being able to read the street names. I don't use it to tell me how to get there, just to be able to read the street names.
TomTom shows ALL the street names and they are readable, same with CoPilot. Navigon doesn't show all the street names.

I think Tomtom has more potential but at the current time Navigon has a superior product. TTS is better, live traffic, and the better ipod handling of the navigon software is far superior IMO.
I'm not sure what age you are but there are Jailbreakers and Jailbreaker thieves....maybe you'll get that now?
My biggest issue with Navigon is the speed at which the app works as well. (Interface wise).
I prefer it over Tomtom, which I owned, and returned due to issues with that as well, but I'm really starting think about picking up Tomtom again, as the painfully slow interface on Navigon is starting to drive me nuts. I've removed and installed it a few times now, and it does work well. However, the load time is ridiculously long, and nearly every button press lags by a very noticeable amount of time. (So much so, at times I think the phone has locked up on me).
I'm not sure what age you are but there are Jailbreakers and Jailbreaker thieves....maybe you'll get that now?
Both are illegal. Jailbreaking itself is illegal.
put another option: "don't have either but want to see how the scores are turning out".....

I don't see an option to edit the poll, only my first post text. Anyhow, at the moment, Navigon is leading 28-12.
I appreciate that you do not like Jail-breaking, but let's not spread FUD about legality. No, despite what Apple would like, Jail-breaking/unlocking is clearly legal. Sure is voids your warranty, but the courts have long recognized that copying software while reverse engineering is a fair use when done for purposes of fostering interoperability.
That said pirating software, is illegal, even if just to demo before buying.
(BTW - I'm not judging anybody who wants to demo an expensive piece of software, just stating the legal POV)
But, just so I'm not completely off topic; TomTom get the nod from me due to better routes. Sure the routes may not be much better, but the only reason I use a GPS nav device is to have a quality route to my destination. the TomTom UI does a great job of delivering this to me in a clear and understandable manner.
Same here. I've got Navigon, but it's so painfully slow that I just find it so difficult to use in practice. TomTom v1.0 and even v1.1 were not at all desirable, but things are finally looking up in v1.2. I may give it a go.
